Hi!

Differential gear didn't like the extra power so I decided to to find a 6 speed gearbox from Fiat Stilo 1.2. There's no 6 speed Puntos in Finland, or at least I've never seen or heard about one.

I had to change original gearbox mount and clutch slave cylinder (or I meant to..). 6 Speed gearbox is a bit longer but doesn't matter, it won't hit anything. 6 speed was a bit heavier also. I changed 16V clutch at the same time to my 1.2 8V Punto, it fits perfectly. Long 1/4" 10mm socket was everything I needed for centering.

Assembly was a bit hard to do alone but I managed to align the gearbox by hanging it with load strap to correct height and used wood blocks to get the angle correct. Then I just pushed them together.

Everything went fine until I started bleeding the clutch, brake fluid everywhere. Something broke. I needed the car next morning so I modified the Stilo slave cylinder to fit (same in newer Puntos). That was pain in the ass but I managed to modify it usable after two hours, still working great :)

Next thing is, of course, change the gear knob to 6 speed. Didn't find any mk2/mk2b ones for sale so I modified it from Grande Punto. Had to drill the hole a bit larger but that was almost it, fits nicely :D

is there any difference now, car got higher end speed or faster acceleration?

Yes acceleration is definitely faster now. But the problem is that there isn't enough friction in first gear. It was bad before but now it's even worse. And yes the top speed should theoretically be higher with lower revs in six gear, not a huge difference though

The biggest problem I have with first gear hard acceleration is the wheels spinning. Surely there must be smoke coming off your front wheels?

:D

Or maybe the differential is better on my car?? Or is there a problem there?? it only seems to spin on one side. Fairly sure it can be either side spinning. At a roundabout in rush hour it is a problem pulling away as I would like the car to move and it just spins too often. Even my wife had the wheels spinning recently. I have been assuming this is just a power problem. Too much power.

Works great, 6 speed is definitely better suited for city driving than 5 speed. It takes a long time to remember which gear to use in different situations. At least for me after driving 10 years with 5 speed :D

Only one wheel spins, never both same time. Car is almost undrivable now in winter with all the extra weight in the back. Bought new summer tires in spring and had to buy new ones again in autumn. Now I have already ruined my winter tires in less than two months :D

how are you ruining your tyres so quickly? I am still on the original summer tyres that came with the car in 2012.

Hahaha I can imagine. I'm also thinking of swaping my 5 speed to a 6 speed I have at home from a late Sporting. But my 8v is stock unlike your sick build :D

Would you recomend that or should I stay as it is?

when you consider trucks have about 13 gears it must be true that if you carry 500kg of extra weight in a 1100 kg car you will need more gears.

Maybe you need fewer batteries, a few large capacitors a truck generator and just spend more on petrol?

A bigger car is the ultimate solution. All that work on a punto is going to get a bit boring one day I think. Particularly in Finland where so many are driving audis volvos mercedes and bmws

I already have lightweight lithium batteries. Subwoofers weight much more, 30kg per piece so 30x8=240kg :D

The whole point in my build is to have a huge sound system in a small car, that's the only reason it's famous. I'm never going to build another car with sound system like that, it's not practical. At least not with current laws but there might be some ease coming to inspections of +40 years old cars. It would be awesome to build freely, age is only a number.

If/when I buy new daily, it won't definitely be any of those. I hate modern cars. Tesla is the only one I could approve, not any currently available model though. But there's something interesting coming. If I had to decide a daily car today, it would be Alfa Romeo 159 sportwagon :D

Your sound system has got to the point that you must be splitting apart the spot welds and not just breaking the glass and yourself!

Imagine what you would be doing if there were no restrictions!

A car is just a means to an end. I think your skills could go into something that is healthier practical and more focused on the direction you want to go in your life. But then I am 64 and more or less like your grand father.

My 2 cents anyway.

if the Stilo gearbox is the same as the Punto 6-speed, then the max speed is the same as with the 5-speed gearbox.

Looking at that I am coming up with the following:

A 6 speed box appears significantly more highly geared at 4.071:1 compared to only 3.438:1?

When the 5 speed box engine has 3000rpm the 6 speed has 2533rpm for the same road speed?
