I fully agree. the thing is, the police actively use ANPR in their search for stolen motors as well so it would be in a criminal's interest to plan a route that avoids those cams.

There's some guy whingeing in my local paper about all the cctv cams that's going up & how it's a breach of civil liberties & human rights etc.

Thing is, when you watch some of the police progs, cctv is actively used to get police on a fight scene straight away & cctv operators can follow criminals & direct police to their location. If matey was being mugged, he'd be the first to moan because police did nothing.

that's what is most annoying.
people will moan but
proves your innocent
offers protection
can cause others to be in guilt

these people should move back to the stone age

I get wound up about speed cams because they are just a self funding racket and dont offer any genuine safety benefit.

But APNR is another thing. All cars should be insured and taxed. The only issue do they check the insured driver is the one holding the steering wheel. I somehow suspect all they do is check for unpaid road tax.

Criminals are part of the general public(unfortunately) but I see your point.
If people think the ANPR cameras are only about motoring offences then I'm afraid they're sadly mistaken. The following two examples may help illustrate this.

1)A man was seen to be bundled into the boot of his car and driven off. His family saw this and told Police they believed the asaillants intended to set fire to the car with the victim still in it. The details were put onto ANPR and the car was picked up in a neighbouring force area by that system.

Using the force helicopter, plenty of local knowledge and a lot of hard work, the car was intercepted and the victim released. On the back seat of the car were a couple of 5 litre cans of petrol and a pile of old newspapers.

The men were later convicted of kidnapping and conspiracy to commit murder.

2)A woman was walking back to her car at a Motorway Service area when she noticed a number of Asian men gathered round a car and a van. On the bonnet was what the woman recognised as a map of a British airport. She recognised this as she used to work there.

As she drove out of the service area behind the two vehicles, they drove in the direction of the said airport. She used her phone to call the Police at the airport and reported what she'd seen and where she and the other two vehicles were at the time. After about half an hour the Police told her to break off and let them get away.

They then used ANPR to check that not only were the suspect vehicles where the woman had said, but that she was indeed following them. PNC revealed one of the registered keepers was known to Special Branch. What the investigation revealed was a link, perviously unknown, between both the men.

Eventually the vehicles carried on past the "target" airport and went to their home addresses. That car and van will now be on the ANPR database and because of the link between the two males so will any others linked to them.

Revealing the location of ANPR cameras will be a disaster in far more ways than just letting the Cops know if someone hasn't paid their Road Tax or insured their car.

I agree with the folks who say the crims should lose their human rights. I hope the Police win on appeal or the law gets changed PDQ.

Number plates were invented to identify cars, but with so many on the roads what's so bad about APNR to help catch the bad guys. Its also handy when a car gets stolen.

Pointless. A lot of police cars have ANPR now. As does the sainsburys car park. Waste of time. The ANPR cat is out of the bag. Privacy is dead, move along, nothing to see here.

I recieved an email today from Walsall Police, Walsall Partnerships Team(WPT) regarding ANPR's. WPT are Police officers that liaise with local neighbourhood watch groups(I'm our local group co-ordinator). A new ANPR has been installed at a local shopping carpark, here's the email.

Dear Watcher or community contact

If you shop in Walsall please note the following changes introduced to the Crown Wharf Car Park.

Don’t be caught out and please pass the information on.

As of today the entrance barrier to Crown Wharf car park has been removed and your arrival will be monitored by an Automatic Number Plate Reader(ANPR).

You will be required to purchase your parking ticket when you are about to leave by entering your vehicle registration number into the ticket machine. Your time in will have been recorded by the ANPR.

Failure to purchase a ticket will result in you receiving a parking fine, your address will be retrieved via the ANPR system.

Please also note the first hour is no longer free.

So I guess disclosure of APNR positions is underway in my area.

Saves money on barrier maintenance and they can collect even more cash with no parking warden labour costs to pay and no-one can get away with it. Thanks, I'll shop elsewhere or my plates might "fall" off.

Will they pass info on to the police when a wanted car is spotted? Pigs and aviation come to mind.

The ANPR in patrol cars etc flags up a norty plate in a millisecond so it might be possible that the one used in this car park can also connect with PNC just to check?

I personally think that all forecourts should have ANPR with auto uplink to PNC. surely it is in the police interest to have an automatic monitoring system in place - not only to deter those who might try stealing fuel but to alert local plod if a norty car pulls in.
Maybe also link it to the pump as well so as soon as the car joins the queue, that pump slows delivery to give the police a chance to arrive & cause a scene
