No to both, mine went on my old board but it was very old. I've never heard of it happening to anyone else. Only viable option is to replace the motherboard, worth testing with another HDD first though just to be safe.

Took the PC out to the reapir shop, turns out the hard drive is fine but the motherboard is done for 
Options are to put my drives back into my old PC (a slower machine then this one, but i am not complaining) or try to find a motherboard that will fit into a pre-Dell Alienware machine.
I dont /cant afford get a new processor or RAM so my choices are limited.

Pre-Dell should be fairly off-the-shelf stuff, does it have a make and model on the board?

Yes and no, the motherboard would be fine but since that auction is just for the backing plate it won't be much use on it's own

I emailed the seller and asked him, his reply "Hi there, it is just themotherboard with a backing plate"
Listing wasn't very clear: "Asus M3A78-EH Motherboard – no warranty, backing plate ONLY – no returns."
