I have a 57 plate panda its now been off the road for about 4 weeks I was driving and the car lost speed and come out of gear and would not go back into gear .

I am not bad at doing some work etc on cars and I asked a local guy for his advice the slave cylinder needed changed so that has been done today

But I started the car and it's not going into gear when the engine is on when you attempt it all you get is severe crunching noise

I am now a bit stuck and thinking more it's to do with gear selector or mechanism or something. Any help or advice on how to locate this and check it would be great really struggling not having my car the wife is also pregnant so even worse with no car lol

I appreciate people taking time to read this and any advice would be great thanks

It sounds like the gear selection is fine. So, clutch:

1. Save cylinder - done

2. System bled - done

3. Master cylinder seals............?

Does pressing the clutch pedal move the clutch lever under the bonnet on the gearbox? I suspect not.

Does it have the internal slave cylinder? As I believe it also incorporates the release bearing.
Try handbrake on, engine off, jack up front of car so wheel off ground.
With engine off put it in first gear then with out pressing clutch start the engine, Check you have drive to the wheel as it should now be turning. Now press the clutch right down and press the foot brake. It the engine stalls then it's deffo a clutch release problem. You could try that with all the gears to rule out a gearbox problem. To me it sounds like a clutch failure.
I can't see it being a seal on the master cylinder as you said it popped out of gear.
I had my clutch replaced at Ellesmere Port gearbox centre. £240 ish and only 3 hrs. They did it whilst I waited.

Did it happen as you were changing gear?

Sadly, the gearbox probably has to come out.

It jumped out of gear while driving? Any clutch failure is unlikely to cause this. This suggests on its own an internal fault with the gearbox, pointing towards bearing failure allowing shafts to move and gears to be disengaged. Any oil leaks? Check especially the right driveshaft seal. It is above the exhaust, so can have a shorter life from the heat, but also burning off leaks, so no oily stains. I caught mine with the occasional smell when stationary at lights.
If a replacement box is needed, there is a guy specialising in Punto and Panda gearboxes, found on Ebay and mentioned here, he's a garage that specialises in Puntos.

With the engine off, select each gear in turn, checking how it feels. If all feel ok, hopefully it is a clutch problem.

With the engine running, you can't engage a gear. Either the clutch is broken, or not disengaging properly. If the system is bled properly, and the slave has been replaced, this suggests a clutch problem. The box has to come out.

Whatever you fine, don't just replace with new. Show some pics of the broken clutch, so that the cause may be identified.
