Apart from mine that was new and stuck shut, that was expensive on the Mazda
Just to be clear, when I was saying they tend to fail open, I was meaning the FIRE engined cars. I've come across other models/brands with thermostats failed closed but never on one of the wee FIAT motors.

Your experience brings up an interesting point where car repairs are concerned and that is that we all tend to take it for granted that a new part is going to be perfect and operate exactly as it should. In most cases this is true but I've been spectacularly caught out a few times by new parts which were not at all up to spec. I always check now that a new part is satisfactory and compare it with the part it's replacing.

If the 2017 model has an expansion tube built onto the left side of the radiator have a look at the TOP of the Left side of the radiator. You will find a black plastic screw bleed screw shaped like a butterfly nut, it's flimsy so take care. Start with a cold engine and unscrew the bleed to get any trapped in of the top off the radiator it may help to squeeze the top and bottom hoses initially But BEWARE OF ROTATING FANS AS THE ENGINE WARMS UP.. I don't know why it's never mentioned when bleeding the cooling system, it certainly won't help engine cooling if there's trapped air in the radiator.
