Technical oil temp gauge

hi allim looking at puting a oil temp gauge into my car i was just woundering if there easy to install or is it a garage job

i did search the forum but i didnt find anything

Im looking into doing this as well.

Thinking outloud/in steps here.

How does the gauge pick up the temperature?
How are you going to allow it to do so. e.g. if it needs oil running past it then might have to tap a line somewhere.

I will be looking into this over the next few days or when I have a bit more time, suggest you google to death though!

i was looking at them yesterdayinhalfords and the bloke said you need to drill a hole in your sump and put the little thermostat in but i was like :S im going to ring a garage tomorrow about it and find out which way theyd do it and ill let you know

Surely the pickup from the sump to the engine is located at the bottom as well, so it will be passing oil through it constantly anyway.

Danny, I looked at a Suburu one(while googling) and you needed to replace the oil and insert a temp sensor/pressure sensor in a new/modified sump plug and then replace the sump plug and replace the oil.

I will continue looking into this when I have a lot more time I think

Seems sandwich plates are the way to go! pretty sure we need to find one that fits the car, it sits between the engine and the oil filter and you then tap the side to get temp and pressure!

Please do a bit more looking into this for me! as I am away from a PC for a few days

Drill a hole in the sump lol typical halfrauds staff. You get sandwich plates which is where you take the feed for the temp from.

Did you get a sandwich plate in the end?

I am still wondering what thread the oil filter is in my 1.4 T-Jet engine, found this on the 1.4 standard I think which is M20 thread filter so guessing thats what the sandwich plate will be like.
