Hi. I have a funny noise when I start the engine. Its a squeaky noise that sounds like a bearing that's in trouble, like a water pump or PS pump or engine oil pump. If I rev it a small amount it goes away and I don't hear it again. It is only on a cold start up. Any ideas please?

Ducatto 2.3 150 on a Motorhome

I had similar noises on start up some 5 years or so ago on my 2017 150 but only on first start up of the day if I had been driving through heavy rain the day before. I suspected the alternator bearing but it all went away after I had the alternator / power steering belt changed. I have had no repeats since it was done 4 years ago.

As intimated by rayc, a squeaky noise immediately after starting, could be due to belt slip. Consider the facts that the starter battery if original is no longer new, and will be partially discharged due to starting. Immediately after starting, the alternator, due to the slightly reduced battery voltage will deliver a much higher than average charge to the the battery for a short time. This higher current will quickly reduce as the battery aquires surface charge on its plates. As the vehicle is a motorhome, the habitation batteries, if of a lead acid type, will behave in a similar fashion. These batteries could be larger than the starter battery, with consequenly greated effect.

Thanks for your replies. It sounds like a failing bearing all squeaky and graunchy. The battery was new in the spring.
I have just come back from a 1800 mile trip to Bavaria, it was doing it well before I left but gave me no problems ???

I had my suspicions with regard to the belt tensioner. I would get the belt and tensioner looked at. The belt is relatively cheap and not difficult to replace.

Is it worse now the weather is colder?

(Belts can sound awful..)
