Hello All,

Anyone recomend the best place to get a starter changed in or near Paris or confirm the starter type for a 2.8JTD Fiat Ducato.

The local French garage installed the wrong starter and now on the lookout to get it done right and most efficiently.

Many thanks,
Liam

Hi Liam,

Welcome to the forum.

I have noticed your plight while scanning another forum of which I am not a member.

I hope that the best advice to date, turns out to be to post here.

For the benefit of other readers, your starter motor failed to work after refilling your tank. A faulty starter was diagnosed by local mechanic, and replaced. The new starter also failed to function, with a smell in the cab.

The other advice that you have received, while well intentioned was either incorrect, or not applicable to your vehicle.

Perhaps ypu could state why you think that the wrong starter was fitted? There is at least one other possible cause for your problem.

If you input your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into electronic Parts Equipment Register (ePER) at the top of the page you should be able to extract the starter part number for your vehicle. However while others have succeded, I have not needed to use ePER myself.

Please note that it is quite possible that the original part number has been superceded.

The VIN number will be on the VIN plate, which is normally located on the cross member over the radiator. I expect it to have the the form ZFA244..........

I am sorry that I cannot help with details of a garage in Paris.

Hi 🙂

Do you have access to the old starter?

They are usually service worthy.. And Guaranteed to be of the correct type 😉

Which edge of Paris?

Thanks Communicator, a very good summary of my plight to date.

The starter was the wrong size as when the mechanic came to change the starter today he showed me the dome of the old and new starter and it was fairly clear the new one was larger. I had actually watched a online video of someone changing a starter with that exact warning.
The mechanic who fitted the starter on the Tuesday of this week never raised the issue of the different size starter and either didn't notice or tried to make it work. The local garage came back today with a more senior mechanic and have advises the new starter will be here next Tuesday.

As the old starter is fairly worn there is no serial number identifying the make so I will take your advice and use the ePER to double check the new starter is compatable.

Thanks for your advice and hopefully it will be sorted next week.

I'm sure that would be the easiest, we sort of took the mechanics advice of a new starter and would be good to have a new one fitted and keep the old as a soveigner 😅...

We are west of Paris, Maissons laffitte

Hello,
Good news Communicator - a Delco Starter was fitted and starting perfectly now, a great mechanic finished off his work with a diagnostic check and mini service, all in under a hour.

After been a week off the road the relief of getting it fixed and delight at been back on the road.

Thanks to all for their assistance and advice and kind words!

Thanks for the update, which is appreciated. I was concerned, due to the bad smell in the cab, that it could have been ignition switch failure.
