Punto (Mk1) My exploit yellow 75 elx

Introduction

Hi.
My name is Simon and I haven't been on here in ages.
I'm a fiat nut who has owned fiats all my life as have my family. I work in a fiat dealership in dundee and have treated myself to a new car, as it's the first time in my life I have been without a fiat.

I bought the following car off ebay for 4 reasons

1. I had one as my first car
2. I just bought a house and have somewhere to keep it
3. My mum had a brand new exploit yellow 55 sx back in '95
4. Have plenty fiat techs to fix it when it breaks

So, I'm in dundee, the car was in Yorkshire, so my dad and I left 5:30am Saturday morning in his 500L to pick it up. I was worried about bringing a near 20 year old fiat 260 mile up the road, but it didn't miss a beat. It drives like a new car.

History- we'll it was sold new to a mrs crappe, at carnell fiat, she had the car garaged from new, done 70,000 miles in it. It had its original dealer plates on it which I changed, as they were tatty. Full years mot with no advisories, and a full service history. She specced it up with a drivers airbag!

The car come with a few parking dings, original scuffed wheel trims, and a couple of light scratches, otherwise it's mint.
Luckily working in a fiat dealer, I can get parts, a workshop with a 40 years served fiat technician, a dent man and body shop.

Took the car into work today to get all the dents removed, was up on the ramps for a health check- solid underneath, just needs new discs and pads and a rocker cover gasket. Underneath is solid, clean and all present and correct. It also needs a new cam belt cover as mine is burst. Then that's it mint.
Turns out the rear tyres are the factory originals, made 3rd week of 1995, so it will be getting a full set of brand new Goodyear duragrips I have in my garage.
Surprisingly every single thing works on the car, even the remote locking and being an elx it has an electric sunroof!!!

It's quite funny because all the fiat techs were all over it today, donating parts. One of them had an exploit yellow touch up pen that's been in his toolbox for 15 years, got handbrake cables and a rocker cover gasket, with more bits offered. They also went on e-sigi and printed out the complete history of my car, showing recalls for brake pipes, airbag ecu etc which is nice to keep.

Work so far done-

New genuine wheel trims
New genuine punto mats
Original fiat tape deck
Genuine fiat lineaccessorie front and rear mudflaps
General tidy up
Clay, wet sand, machine polish bodywork
New numberplates
Dents removed
Brand new badges
Full valet

I love this car, I can't believe how mint it is. Taking bad with no power steering though.
I put it in the showroom and took some piccies.
Anyway the pictures.......

c'mon puntofan01, i understand its super clean original car but you can't get upset about a set of wheels!! Just do as you want Simon, its your car and at end of the day so long as you don't start cutting and welding stuff its as you said, all easily changed back. I mean i think we all know you ain't gonna stick a 90's bodykit on it and paint it purple and fit underglow etc lol.

Remember the issues I had with the gt wheels, couldnt decide whether to put them on as I wanted to keep it factory, and did it one day after spending a fortune on tyres.

If I find a set of tipo wheels I will get them diamond cut and put them on, doubt that's gonna happen though as they are so rare.

Wheels are easily changed if need be. I wouldn't go changing suspension and engines etc

which is fair, i tend to not be so bothered about keeping things original although i get why people do.. looking at my car history though iits pretty rare i can leave things alone... turbo converted cento x2, my last cinq was engine converted twice lol. My current panda is undergoing 750 carb to 1242 injection swap - I am always on the lookout for another little project, despite not actually having funds or space for another - prob won't keep the panda ll that long once its done, when i sell it yes it won't be as original but it will certainly have a new lease on life - much newer engine, all the suspension will be brand new and the brakes, new interior - basically a new car ready to roll for another 100k miles - it was pretty original bar some stickers and wheels but it was also pretty tired. and tbh it would be pretty easy to put it back to stock, i've not got rid of the original engine or anything.

I do like a standard car but I'm sure subtle changes would be ok and keeping the original parts to put back if you need to , no body kits cutting or silly spoilers [emoji12] , I would like a set of integrale wheels on mine [emoji848]

IMO forget the Tipo Sedi wheels... totally wrong for the car in terms of both size and style. Didn't you have some lovely new Bravo Abarth wheels that you considered and then (wisely) sold on? As discussed previously the 14" alloys and tyres you have on it now are on the limit of what was authentic and practical for a Mk1 Punto, and you've admitted that you struggle with the steering.

Personally I'd prefer to see your immaculate original wheels and trims back on the car... the 5-door ELX was never sporty and it's understated image should be appreciated. It's a reminder of a simpler time when steel wheels with smooth trims was the sensible way to go for most cars, without everything being expected to come with big wide alloys and rubber-band tyres...

The majority of the snow has gone, so took the opportunity today to get the cover off and let it run for a bit, as well as my neighbours 500 who is away for a month.

Happy to report that my battery gadget I bought is working a treat and after 4 weeks of sitting in the drive in -temperatures, the car started no bother.

Moved it up and down the drive to free off the brakes. Roll on the dry weather

Agree with Bluejohn about the wheels - small steelies and plastic covers are the way to go (weigh less than alloys too - go figure!). Car needs as little unsprung weight as possible, and your steelies and mint covers provide that!
