I have just called Motormech to enquire about having my variator done in my HGT Punto. This obviously includes having the cambelt changed and ive asked for the tensioners and water pump to be done at the same time.

All in all (including labour) theyve qouted me £235!!! I know for a fact that the parts on shop4parts are around the £250 mark!!

I made him confirm that that price was for all the mentioned parts plus labour and he said yes! Somebody mentioned on puntomk2 that they could be using bogus parts? Has anybody dealt with these or even better had a variator done on a HGT?

It just sounds too good to be true!!

Motormech in Bham has a very good reputation around these parts.
They are specialists in the 5 cylinder engine aswell.

However I'm sure they list a timing belt change as £400. Maybe they reckon they can do variator without doing timing belt?

Ahhhhhh! I called them up again to confirm the lot and its actually £265 (i misheard) PLUS £30 for water pump PLUS VAT @ 15%....so worked out its costing £340 which still is a hell of a price!!

Searching around the forum ive heard nothing but good things about them and i asked if they'll be using fiat parts and they said yes so that worry's over!

Jonnio has discovered a fiat specialists 5miles away from me...couldnt believe it...the same work being done is £400....so going to Motormech 60miles away will save me £40 taking into account petty money. However ill be waiting 4ish hours in the garage and if anything were to go wrong its 60miles away to sort?

Motormech did the cambelt and waterpump change on my 20v in January, I thought they did a great job for a very reasonable price.

You don't have to wait in the garage for your car, less than 200 yards away is an entrance to the Bullring shopping centre or Moor Street Train Station.

Mine suffered cam-belt failure 11months and 1,000 miles after having cambelt changed by motormech. Seems tensioner wasn't tightened enough.

Had mine done in January..... so that'll be Christmas ruined then :p

Motomech did most of the work on my coupe 20vt

They also did quite a bit of work on my bravo which included a cambelt change and had lasted well 3 years and 40k later :)

I have never had any problems with them and couldnt reccomend them enough!

I would also recommend them. They have always worked on my Fiats (& any other cars I've had) and do a good job at a reasonable price. The only thing is it can be a struggle to get your car in as they are always so busy.

Hellcat - Sorry to hear about your car

Where abouts specifically is this motormech in birmingham? Because i live in birmingham and could become handy in the future.

....Also does anyone know any scrapyards in birimgham with alot of fiat parts? I need a passenger door and front wing for a W Reg Met Blue Punto.

Thanks.

Luke: presumably you found Motormech from Dave's link? I'll be taking Liquorice (my black Panda) in soon, amongst all those big scary Coupes :p Although they're known as Italian car specialists, as an ex-Citroen man, Paul will also be re-chassising my 1969 2CV van in a couple of weeks :slayer:
