Technical Mot fail and a burst radiator!

Mine is a 230 that was a typo! So same vans, I think everyone has there own way of doing it, I started doing stuff when I got my first car a 1972 cortina lol
Ah i did wonder , never heard of a 130 . So a 72 Cortina huh , mine was a 72 Marina , them was the day's !

Yeah , i realise that . I ran into problems when i did my wheel cylinder , self adjusters never work , had a similar problem with my mk1 Fiesta . Forever taking the dam things off , gave up with them in the end , and i had that car 15 years .

The method above is from the manual i have , but i have to admit it's a very fiddly job .

It's funny as I had the exact same fail 2 years ago but on the other wheel, same thing cylinder leaking but it had not soaked averything in fluid, I did exact same repair I have just done and it passed the retest no probs

Hi

The brake adjustment will determine the free play before the shoes contact the drum, and could have an effect when braking lightly but I can't see it making much of a difference once the brakes are being used "in anger" and all the slack is taken up. With the same hydraulic pressure each side (by design) and the same wheel cylinder size, the pressure exerted on each pair of shoes will be the same. Given the same type of shoe each side and both equally bedded in, plus drums with the same surface condition, the braking force will be well balanced side to side.

As above, forget about cleaning friction material. Fit new shoes to each side and clean the friction surfaces of the drums as best you can.

Actually Ant , i believe the hand brake is tested as a separate item during the mot , as it's classed as a safety device . But you're quite correct , it don't make much of a difference when the vehicle brake is , as you quite eloquently put it , "used in anger" .
I have heard of several people in the motorhome world being caught on this technicality .
