Hi

I have a 2003 stilo 1.9JTD and after driving for about an hour yesterday the car cut out on me saying "low oil pressure". It wouldn't start again for about 15 mins and then I managed to get it off the main road and it then cut out again with the same fault.
I have checked the oil level and it is full.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Could be a problem with the oil pressure sensor or it's wiring or connector.

I don't know it this applies to the Stilo but many cars will cut out when the oil pressure gets low, or the ECU gets a false signal from the sensor to avoid damaging the engine.

Remember also that Stilos (or at least JTDs) say 'low oil press' when you stall, so the stalling might not be because of low oil pressure, but the warning might just be occuring because the car's stalled, if that makes sence!

To be honest I thought I had stalled but then it didn't start straight away which made me think it was something else......

I have the same problem for sometime.
The car is stalling when I press the clutch, and drastically the motor falls to 0 rpm.
The warning says "low oil pressure" but it is something else.
The mechanic did not find any fault with it, and the car just starts directly after, or if I release the clutch before it goes down to 0 rpm, then there is no problem.

What I have noticed is that the car has this behaviour when the temperature outside is a couple of degrees below 0.
Someone suggested that it could be moisture that crystallize in the fuel conduits and perhaps mixing in a couple of percent of ethanol in the fuel should work, but I have not tried that yet.

Anybody else has the same problem?

I think i have a faulty sensor in mine, about a year ago i got an oil change and 2 days later i got *low engine oil pressure stop engine* when i start the car. Took it back said it was all fine.

That lasted the whole year, it didnt happen all the time but it was always on start up.

I got it serviced about 3 weeks ago and it didnt do for 2 weeks. I started the car this morning at -2c and it done it !:bang:

i guess the cold weather is messing up the sensor !

This happens, especially if there is an "unbranded" oil fitler. The OEM filters have valves within that prevent oil from returning, keeping the pressure up.

Use a good synthetic oil, 5W40 or so - and buy a FIAT OEM filter specific for your engine. They cost slightly more but do the job.

Symptoms are low oil pressure at initial startup. Hit the accelerator (at idle) and the problem vanishes.

ok will do ! thanks, is this doing damage to my engine?

Ive bought an oil filter for my jtd from buypartsby do you think it will be ok or should i buy a fiat one. I dont want to have any problems and have to buy another bottle of expensive oil.

No, I wouldn't think so (though I really don't know), it's more annoying than destroying. :) But you can change filters and try. If you are fast, you won't drop much oil either. I've done it. Had to refill 0,5 liters. Pretty dirty job, and remember to wet the seal with fresh oil. Make sure the old seal comes off with the old filter.

If this doesn't cure it, you might have some worn big end bearings or those bearings around the crank / piston rods.

duuuuuuuuuude dont tell me that  why couldn't you just say u need a new sensor

Sorry to be a pain in the ass but is there anyway to check the end bearings/piston rods?

also i dont know if this will effect it but i need a new battery if i dont run the car for about 4-5 days its dead

thanks for your help

Might just be that. Get it checked.

An oldschool mechanic will hear it. :) I remember with the old Ritmo TC130 Abarth we were off to get some parts from a friend's garage. His father came out and said, "hey, you've got some serious 'rod-knocking' there" (directly translated from Norwegian, meaning the bearings in the lower part of the piston rods). And he was right, they were worn out.

Either your battery is gone, the alternator isn't charging or you have some sort of short circuit / earth problem. Get a voltmeter and measure the voltage between battery negative and some other shiny metal.
