Technical Loud squealing

Hi
I just went for a drive tonight after the car has been standing for about 2-3 days and for some reason when changing down from 4th to 3rd and the revs increase a loud squaling noise occours. It also does this sometimes when accellerating with the wheels turned e.g. pulling out onto a road or out of a parking space.

any ideas?

Any idea where the noise is coming from?

I'd suspect the alternator belt.

Well it only started the noise late last night so didnt want to mess around checking in the dark and the cold... the noise was definatly coming from the front of the car if that helps.... bit of an engine noob but how hard is the belt to change.. if that is what it is? thanks

It's no biggie. I'd try tightening it up a bit first. On the 1108s, at least, it's easier if you remove the plastic wheelarch liner.

ok thanks ive got a haynes so ill have a go and see if it stops the squaling.. if it dosnt then i guess im needing a new belt then?

Yes, althoiugh you should see some improvement. If the belt is cracked or glazed it really wants replacing anyway.
