Tomorrow I need to get from Wembley to Plumstead, in the rush hour preferably without hitting the congestion charge zone. Never been to Plumstead in my life. Directions please?

You could either go all round the North Circular (A406) to the Woolwich free ferry. When you get off the ferry southside of the river turn left at the roundabout. Plumstead is about 1½ along that road.

Or, come down the A5 Edgware Road, Marble Arch, Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner, Vauxhall Bridge Road. Over Vauxhalll Bridge then head for Camberwell, Peckham, New Cross, Greenwich, Charlton, Woolwich, Plumstead.

The southern end of Edgware Road and all of Marble Arch, Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner and the northern end of Vauxhall Bridge Road used to be a free route through the middle of the Congestion Charging Zone but now the western extention to the zone has been abolished, those roads are just outside the zone. They are right on the edge of it, so you need to make sure you don't turn left anywhere into the zone.

I can take my car on a ferry??? I think I may head for Kew bridge and get across the river, once I am on that side I dont have to worry about straying into the congestion charge. I always seem to manage it, I hate driving up there with all those people on bicycles getting in the way I have ended up in the congestion charge zone before because it was that or hit a cyclist and that would have messed up my car a lot.

Where this goes through Clerkenwell and the City, isnt that all congestion zone?

No, it goes along city road, that skirts around the edge of the congestion zone. I take that route to my other office 3 times a week.

You never been on the Woolwich ferry? It's great...... queue up for about an hour to get on then 3 minutes to get across the river. Shame they stopped selling duty free on it now though. :(

Just give the cyclists a little nudge on their rear tyre. Gets them out of the way and doesn't damage your front bumper. (y)

Don't forget your passport if you're coming southside of the river. (y)

I went through the Blackwall Tunnel for the first time a few weeks ago, taking my son to a gig at the 02. I didnt intend to go that way, I just got lost. That was the day I decided I hated my GPS and sold it on ebay.

Passport? I was thinking more along the lines of a stab vest and baseball bat.;)

i'd go that way, less chance of getting lost and everyone should go on the ferry at least once in their life time

Thanks Davren for the tip about the 406 and the Woolwich ferry, that was such an easy trip! We waited 20 mins to get on it going over and about 10 mins coming back. It was around 6pm too so I thought that was pretty good. Took lots of pictures like a tourist as well.(y)

This is surely one of the simple little things that is good about the internet (as opposed to the ones that are not so good). A little community helping each other in a gentle and good-natured fashion.
What a nice change from that lunatic who appeared amongst the "riots" thread and threatened to rip somebody's head off (or similar vivid threat).
