I actually want to get my car up and running as quick as possible so I think I will put the idea of a 1.4 conversion on hold for now and put a 1.2 in and see how that goes as I want the easiest option to get the car up and running again after this head gasket failure.

I have read the guides on fitting the 1.2 and it is not clear what donor engines are suitable for the basic 1.2 8v transplant. Is only the Mk1 Punto 8v engine suitable, or is the MK2 Punto 8V also OK for this transplant?

I have seen this MK2 Punto 1.2 8v engine on ebay which seems relatively low mileage http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150925523787

Would this one fit in without needing to mess about changing the ECU, wiring loom etc, i.e a straight swap?

Do I need to get a Supersprint manifold for the 1.2 8v conversion or does the std manifold fit OK?

Finally would someone who knows what they are doing be able to supply the exhaust extension piece required to get the exhaust to fit for the 1.2 conversion? I would very happily pay for it.

I changed from 899 to 1242 8v, and it wasn't too bad, so from 1100 to 1242 should be straight forward. Everything should bolt straight on. So any 1242 8v should be fine. Just look out for crank sensor mountings. You want one that fits on the oil pump the same as the 1100. I do believe some are different.

But yes if you use you're old manifolds and sensors, ecu is the same.

No need for a supersprint, but the engine is 10mm taller, so get a bit of steel 10mm thick and use the gasket as a guide. Drill a 45mm hole in the middle and three 8mm holes around it, two gaskets later and bob's you're uncle, one spacer plate, quickest and cheapest way.

I had to cut one headlight adjuster off, because it fouled the timing belt cover and came a little close to the belt for comfort. Also I am using a punto inlet mani, so I had to adjust the throttle cable bracket on the tb, because the punto one is longer than the cinq I think. Again yours should fit straight on.

Check clearance under the bonnet, if you are using the stock filter housing.
I'm sure I've seen 1242's with the stock housing, but worth a look.

Get a new clutch while you're there. Flywheel is larger on the 1242 I think. But yours will fit on.

Should be simple enough, just take you're time and keep us updated with lots of pics. You will enjoy the low down grunt of the 1242, compared to the 1100.

My 899 to 1242 was like getting off a donkey, and into the starship enterprise.
I wouldn't mind a 1368 but the jury seems to be out as to the drivability. 1368 a bit rev happy top end power, in comparison to the long torque of the 8v lump.
I would like to try one first, if anyone fancies taking me for a spin ;)

Ok, so some info we need.

What car and engine do you currently have fitted???

I will go off the idea you are running a Cinq for option 1.

Cinq 1108cc

Basically and mk1 punto 8v SPI (55=1108 60=1242) motor is plug and play, all you need is the ecu, code box and key to match the engine, its a bolt for bolt swap to get the block in and then just unplug the old ecu and plug the new one in and swap the code box over and then fit the Punto chip into your Cinq key.

P75 is a little more difficult due to fuel lines and extra injectors but that covered in guides.

Sei 1108cc SPI.
Basically the same as the cinq.

Sei 1108cc MPI.
just fit either a fresh 1108 mpi motor to get you back on the road or fit a Mk2 Punto 1242 8v MPI but they are all only 60ish bhp.

if a 1368cc 16v conversion is too much for you, don't even contemplate trying to fit a P75 into an MPI, its more hassle than a 16v, trust me on this!

Thank you very much all for the responses, much appreciated.

Huwbishop - I certainly will do a nice build thread with lots of pics once I get going with the project.

Mariocinq - I have an immaculate 1998 Cinq Sporting 1.1 that is totally original. Hence a 1.2 swap for a bit of extra power yet keeping the car as factory as possible as there cant be many original examples left now! I thought you could get away with using the original ECU for the 1.2 8v swap? Also given how HARD Punto MK1 engines are to find now, let alone one with the matching ecu, key etc....

Fingers - so ANY 1.2 Punto MK2 engine block mated with my existing head would do the trick?

Ok so you have a Cinq, Good lad, they are great cars.

So with that in mind if you want a little more power I would say get a P60 motor as that can be ran on the stock ECU but will only be running around 57-58bhp due to the map being different to the 1.2 map.

As an example, I swapped my Cinq from running 1.1 to a running P75 1242 8v in 1 day, but that was the second engine change I had done on it so already knew the little tricks you learn.

What exactly is the issue with your current motor???

Yep, they are cracking little motors, had another sporting a few years back and really missed having it to nip around town hence I just had to buy this one when it came up!

Where would I find a P60 engine though?

The problem with my car is that it overheated badly a couple of weeks ago which in turn has busted the head gasket....

just a little info on the p60 p75 p85 ect

p60 = Punto 60 its a mk1 punto 60 usually has 60 written on the wing, its single point injection and pretty much exactly the same engine as the cinq but with the 1242 bottom end

p75 = punto 75, a mk1 punto that are usually 5 door and have 75 written on the wing, its multi point injection and has the 1242 bottom end

p85 = punto 85, again a mk1 but this runs the 16v engine and multi point injection, this is the one you need most of your bits from to do the 1.4 16v conversion, ie engine loom, ecu, codebox, key and Ariel

Have you not considered just replacing the Head Gasket??? its about 2hrs work at worst.

P60 engine was fitted to the Mk1 Punto 60, its the 1242 8v SPI engine so is fundamentally the same as the 1108 8v SPI but with a few extra cc.

Personally, I would get a HG and just replace it mate, its a lot less hassle and will get you on the road again and the money you save you can throw in a pot and start saving for the 1.4 16v conversion.

But there again, that's me speaking sensibly for once.
