Seems to be a puddle of gunk on top of one of my injectors( where the injector goes into the head)
I want to remove the injector to replace whatever seal is underneath it.
I've not had an injector off before.
Am I likely to get sprayed with 200 psi diesel???
Is there a gasket on top of them same as a spark plug??
I believe there are 2 seals.
From what I've read a leaky fuel injector leads to a black fuel filter... How is this????.... Does unused fuel pickup oil from somewhere??
Cheers
Marty.

Leave car for 30mins (in reality 10 is enough but be sure/safe) before undoing any pipes, pressure will be gone for sure.

Biggest problem will be injector tightness, you might need a special pulley tool to get the injector out so soak it thoroughly first to loosen.

Cheers
Is the washer under it something I'd get in halfords???(tomorrows Sunday!!)

Also I've noticed a bit of oil leaking out a breather hose.. Is this a sign of fuel getting into oil???
Thanks
Marty.

Ok got it out... And j understand answer to my leaking question now.

It is/was however covered in gunk...all except for the tip... So it's either leaking compression or the injector is leaking half way down.

Just an update.
Sorted this yesterday.
Crush washer under injector was leaking.
Was tricky removing injector and tricky cleaning up the pile of gunk around the injector whilst keeping it out of the chamber.
Anyway it's running great again... The farting sound which I was convinced was coming from intake manifold has disappeared aswell.

Not sure if your asking me what kind of washer is under the injector or what condition it was in??... However I'll answer both!!
The copper washer is 2mm high.. Inner diam 7.5 OD 12

It showed evidence of leakage... Black sections on it.
It was tricky enough to get out, but always knew I'd get it out if u know what I mean!!!

Made up a nozzle for my Hoover that went right down into the bore that could pick up all the crap effectively as I chipped away... Reminded me of being at the dentist.

Yeah that's exactly what I ment, reckon you can getaway with just a new copper seal as it has obviously been leaking from what you describe however you do normally get a air seepage sound to go with it?

Yeah new copper seal did the trick.
It was making a farting noise... But it was less evident as engine warmed up.

Cleaning out the cylinder chamber and removing the injector were the tricky bits... But handy enough really in hindsight.
Engine still a little rough at about 1300 rpm when in neutral and you gently climb it through the revs.
Not sure if that's normal or not.
I'd really like to clean the injectors.
Might try running some liqui moli stuff through them neat or maybe a diy injector clean.

hi Marty , i think i have the same issue with my injectors ,i have a puddle of diesel on top of the engine around each injector .
How easy is it to do the seals and where did you get the new ones from .I have a 03 JTD on 124,000 miles (ex taxi) it runs fine but i think a lot of the seals have reached the end of their life i also have a leaky crank seal but i want to get the injectors sorted first as it will affect fuel consumption

The copper seal at the bottom of the injector if leaking will cause tarry deposits up around where the injector goes into the head.
I kinda butchered together a slide hammer and it took a bit if effort to get it out.
Washers are cheap... About a quid each from your local diesel injector specialist.
I just measured washer, it's 2mm high,7.5mm inner and 16.5mm outer diameters.

You say a puddle so maybe the topseal which is just an o-ring(no need to remove injector) or a loose pipe to injector or on rail... Get someone to rev the engine whilst you look around for a leak, mine was making a farting noise but I was convinced it was from inlet manifold.

Which crank seal is leaking??

I don't know which crank seal is leaking yet (only had the car a week) not even 100% it is the crank seal it just seams the logical place given where the oil is visible from and there is oil on the inside of the cambelt cover which i assume shouldn't be there .RE the injectors it is defo a puddle of diesel so will do what you suggest ,

Thanks Martyh

Could be rocker cover seeping down to front if casing.
I'd get someone to rev the engine while you look for a leak.
If it's tarry stuff... Start removing injectors.
Have s Hoover ready and put some half inch plastic pipe onto it and get some long thin blunt tools for cleaning up the chambers.
I used a timber handle to clean the seating surface at the very bottom so as not to scratch the seat.
Some carb cleaner would be handy too to soften the gunk, I had some foray cleaner it was only ok
