just got in from picking it up, a GS model in silver, it's quite smart looking if a little bland at the front, roomy for a big bloke plenty of headroom, good vision all round. seems well put together, no squeaks or rattles. picks up nicely but doesn't seem to brake that smoothly.

I'm the only Kia tech where I work. Which engine you pluck for the test. I love the diesel, very punchy, but have found the ride a bit firm. But the quality of the build would put some manufacturers to shame.

Went on the launch course a while back. There is a 2.0ltr Derv on the way with a 6 speed box, that should go like the clappers.

I feel that Kia have raised their game, unlike Peugeot, lets hope the new 308 is better than the outgoing 307,,,

came with a 1.6 petrol engine. went for a motorway punt down to addington palace for a wedding, about 150 miles round trip on the M25. engine seemed to pull well enough and was quiet at 70, is quite a bit of wind noise from the window seals though. gearchange though is appalling, very very notchy with a definate "stop" feel each time you go through neutral. the ride's a touch firm, but didn't jar, or feel crashy or bad surfaces. got a little roly poly in some corners, but still held on.

for a relatively small car, there is quite a huge range of seating and steering wheel adjustment, and as such found a good driving position , which still left enough room behind me for a friend to be comfy. the aircon was a bit pathetic, the panda blows harder and colder. but i did like the mp3 radio, with aux input and usb socket, plugged in an old pendrive and away it went. it seems really well put together, paint, fit and finish are all very nice indeed.

i havent had a test drive yet, but i agree the finish and fit are good. kia deserve respect for all the effort and thought that has gone into this car.

overall i thought the car was excellent, very well put together, and very comfy, the centre console was a little fussy and actually looked more old style japanese, rather than the modern look the maker was claiming for it.

annoying niggles : that gearchange...maybe a few more miles to loosen it, but i absolutely hated it

why was the indicator on the right side of the wheel? and the trip computer is operated by a button reached through the steering wheel.....

the aircon is far too weak, and black on orange dials look very low rent

good stuff: very comfy seats, massive range of adjustment, still with loads of room for rear passengers. ipod and usb connectors very good and work well with the steering wheel controls

rides and handles well enough, a bit noisy around the windows, but the engine itself wasn't bad at all, apparantly the diesel, which the garage have said i can try on friday, is far far better, and "pulls like a train"

big boot

overall, i liked the car, the big plus is that 7 year warranty, which the sales bloke said was anything and everything, which shows a level of commitment thats admirable. how they process any claims remains to be seen, i would imagine it's far more streamlined and easier than others we could think of, since they are in the mode of brand building, rather than treading water.

would i buy one brand new? no, but second hand, maybe a year or two old, with kias brand name still not considered all that, would make an excellent buy at what...30-45% less than the new price? and have a massive warranty still attached to it

good review thanks jai (y)

hyundai still have the indicator on the right too, i find you get used to it after a couple of days. c'eeds built after April 2007 have the indicator stalk on the left (which is a response to demand from UK customers).

the gearchange issue would be a big deal for me. i wonder if you were just unluckly and got a bad example?

i agree i wouldnt buy one new, but a 2 year old c'eed should be a real bargain.

i want kia to make a hyundai coupe competitor next.

I much prefer the Indicator stalk being on the right, don't have to take my left hand off the gearstick and makes it much easier to indicate coming off roundabouts etc... but my cars 12 years old lol -_-

Its nice to see Kia making an effort and not releasing sub par cars!

The right hand stalk indicator thing is an old jap trade, my old Slyvia had the same setup, very nippy putting the wipers on at every junction plus it had a badly fitted 300Z steering wheel which negated the self cancel function just to ad to the fun!

It's easy to say any new car is good as they are an unknown quantity until a couple of years down the line where faults develop and this won't be easy to judge on the Kia cos I don't think they will sell in huge numbers.

Jug, why aren't you down at the Kia dealership arranging a trade in?

Liam

At one time all right hand drive cars had the indicator on the right as it meant you need not remove your hand to indicate and change gear, for instance if you are slowing down to negotiate a junction and indicating your intention.

It was only with the advent of cars being designed & built for left hand drive markets and then converted to RHD that we had to get used to having the indicator on the left as manufacturers started to make cost savings by not making two sets of column controls. There are other things that happen to RHD cars designed as LHD, from dodgy brakes on MK1&2 Golfs to the stupid bar that runs along the foot well on Cinqs to operate the clutch etc etc

This is going even further now by some cars, Clio springs to mind with the wipers the wrong way round as well and a convoluted wiper arm to compensate rather than change them over completely to ensure the drivers view is clear.

Japanese cars designed & being built from the start as RHD cars and then converted for LHD markets therefore have there indicators on the correct side for RHD cars.

Being in the position of having a RHD Jap car, and a LHD Italian car it feels so natural to have the indicators on the correct side in both :D
