I'm just speculating but - only one key - this sounds like it could be the sort of car that a reputable FIAT dealer wouldn't touch - which just might be why it's ended up being sold outside the main dealer network. If so, this may only be the start of the OP's problems....

You have raised a good point jrkitching. There was a programme on TV recently warning Irish people of the dangers of buying an import from the UK. As in, you arrive over, go scurrying around looking for the 'right car', think you're getting a bargain and hey presto you're back in Ireland with car and it gets repossessed
. It appears the car is a clone. In the majority of cases where this has happened the customer has only been supplied with ONE key. As they say 'dodgy cars attract dodgy dealers' - our 'friend' probably bought his car in a car park but then I'm only speculating.

I wasn't being magnanimous - I totally agree he is a c*ck of international standing, but I'm still pleased he posted his cockness - particularly as it has generated some amusing replies.
I have a similar problem as the person that did this post, but I shall try to be be more polite with my question and will be very grateful for assistance. I purchased a Dolbo 2007 from a Fiat Dealer in Scotland, it only had one key the spare. They ordered a new key from Fiat which they promptly lost and had to reorder again.
Unfortunately I am in Spain now and the dealer has sent me the new master key. However it only opens the doors manually not via the button and it will not start the car either. Am I missing something here? should I do some procedure to get the key to work?
Grateful for any suggestions.

A session on examiner (or equivalent) is needed to configure the car to the new key..
Plenty of ex-pat autolocksmiths in spain, Usually along the coast.

Hmmmmmm now is there anyone i would trust less than a locksmith who has "retired" to the Costa del Sol?

It is not just those that I have retired to the Costa del Sol that you've have to worry about. Fuengirola and Peurto Banus are prime examples of places where you have the '2 extremes' - a petty criminal or the 'higher end'
criminal domicile. And some of the 'professional' solicitors have granted themselves a 'licence to steal' with countless numbers of individuals who have either 'lost' deposits / government 'stamp duty' or bought apartments that never had planning permission. At least in the UK / Ireland a private seller doesn't have to pay a 'fee' to the government when a car is sold on.

A new key question

I bought from auction a few days ago a 2011 500 popular. It only came with one key, the remote one.
I have read through all previous posts and I would like to avoid paying for another remote key. I would be happy with a non-remote key to use in an emergency.
I saw on ebay a blank for approx £3. I would post a link but as a newbie Im not allowed to.
My question is do you think a "regular" key shop could cut this key blank, or am I just wasting my time. Any comments/advice welcome.
Automotive keys seem very odd these days. Recently I had to pay £98 to a locksmith for one for a 10 year old DAF truck but only £12.86 for one for a 2 year old Jag.

OK thank you for that.
Would I be right in thinking that a key blank once cut to my original will unlock the door (manually using the door handle lock) and turn off the alarm and start the car. But wont work remotely?

You are wrong.
A properly cut key blank will unlock the door but you won't be able to start the car (this might actually be useful if you want to hide a key on the outside of the vehicle as a precaution against locking your keys in it).
The 500 has an immobiliser, but no alarm. The car (not the key) has to be programmed to accept the transponder in the key or the immobiliser won't deactivate.
Fiat will likely charge you in the region of £150 to supply and program a non-remote key; a remote one will be about £50 more than that. Some aftermarket companies can provide you with a non-Fiat manual key and reprogram the car so that works correctly; expect to pay around £75.
There are no cheap (as in sub £50) solutions.
This is the price of modern vehicle security, and one of the reasons why cars with only one key typically sell for around £200 less.
