I have just bought a Fiat Punto W (2000) Reg but the owner only had a blue key. I have tried in town today to get a spare key cut but none of the local locksmiths could do it (Timpsons etc). They all said I would have to go to the dealer which would cost ~£150 or so they said.

Does anyone have an idea where I can get a replacement key in the Nottingham area?

thanks in advance!

Well I live in Ilkeston which is down the road from Nottingham, and the Timpsons here have cut me a key from a blue one before with no problems. What did they say exactly?

They put the key in their machine and said they couldnt decode the transponder chip inside and the only place that 'would' be able to would be the dealer.

Right, the one in our town could. He even wrote the code on some paper for us incase we needed it. Maybe your key is different or already a copy? Doubt that would affect it though.

It seems a genuine key so doubt its a copy.

I took it to a few places other than Timpsons who said they could make a key copy but the car wouldn't start without the chip so pointless!

I'm not bothered about not having the spare but obviously want one incase this one breaks or snaps and I don't want to have to fork a three digit sum out for a key!

I posted the numbers for FIAT key blanks a while back, you could look that up. If your blue key is a FIAT one it should have a number stamped on one side of the blade, ie. b345 and on the other side you should have a stamp that has a figure 2 and what looks like a triangle in two circles. A new key can be made from this. Try google for autolocksmiths in nottingham, I got loads of names, ring round and get the best price. The blanks are cheap, so don't pay too much.

Cheers mate!

Mine has the '2' and the triangle and circles on one side and the other it has b365. Is that alright? Do I just take the key to timpsons or wherever and give them the code you put on here?

OK you have a FIAT key, with the blade code of b365, the other stamping tells you it is a later transponder system (not a 3 key/ red key system). You need an AUTOLOCKSMITH, not a hardware store to make you a sound spare key.

Do you know how much I'd be looking to pay roughly?

A cheaper option is to get a key blank from ebay and use the plastic body with your transponder and blade. If you need a spare cut key blade then get Timsons etc to cut one and transfer the transponder if your blade gets worn.

Obviously this wont be a fix if you lose the key but £15 per year will buy you key insurance with up to £1500 cover for new key and consequential costs.
