I have a Fiat Ulysse from 2004, type JTD (diesel). When accelerating the engine stops all of a sudden. This happens when accelarating in too low gear, e.g at 20 km/h in third gear, or 80 km/h in 5th gear. The garage dignosed that the high pressure fuel pump must be replaced. Does anybody have some experience with it? Is the garage right in its diagnosis? Can I replace it myself?

Before going to the expense of a new HP pump, you should change your fuel filter. See the link below:

It seems that the latest diesel fuel specification foisted on us by the EU is causing a lot of problems. Some owners of nearly new cars have had to change their fuel filters every couple of thousand miles. A sticky gel forms on the surface of the fuel filter stopping fuel reaching the HP pump. The symptoms are similar to 'diesel waxing' in very cold weather. The RAC has produced statistics showing the problem is more prevalent in the NE of England and in Scotland, although it does occur all over the country.
