Panda (Classic) John Dragon Man's 4x4 Sisley

Introduction

Hello!

Well, I have been waiting a long time to do this!

Introducing (Drum roll please!).....

Edit: about half way through the time it took me to get the car on the road it found the name Talon. So everyone Meet:
Talon. My Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley:

Great Looking car.. As i am sure you all agree!

It has its Good points:

No Horrid noises in any gear and the 4x4 system works and sounds brilliant! Its a Sisley! And it came with some nice extras such as the light grill covers.

and also nice low mileage.

And it has its bad points... Lots of bad points:

Mid body rust, This is the worst on the drivers side (in the UK) front wing:

The Doors are Rusty.. Ok, i did expect this as it seems to be a common thing on most Fiats over 10-15 years old:

And the other Door, Not as bad.. I may be able to save this side!

"Phantom Electronics" the electronics do what they want to do, when they want to do it. No Switches necessary!

Also the Fuse box now lives here :( That means that a flap has been cut in the pocket :(

The Exhaust is very broken, in multiple parts. even the down pipe!

Lastly and by far the worst, Under body rust. Now its not as bad as it could be. The rear sills on both sides have a small 1 - 2 inch hole in them. No biggy.
I have still yet to remove all the plastic wheel arch liners and have a proper look.
Here's a picture from the front drivers side wheel arch, its only a skin so a easy repair:

A bit of work needs doing to the brakes, pads i think. The fluid needs changing and the drivers side front brake pipe is corroded so i will replace that.

Also the engine needs a good cleaning up, a full on service replacing the water pump, cam belt, tensioner pulley, distributor cap and rotor arm, filters, oil, radiator, coolant and starter motor.

I also need a few things like a locking filler cap, the little clips that hold the air box together, a new boot gas strut and a non damaged back bumper.

Its the car I have always wanted right from when I was a young lad. So you can imagine how I was when I won it on eBay for a grand total of £547. Getting it from Wales To my home town of Derby Cost me £135.

With some love, care and late nights I reckon I can turn it into a cracking motor!

Oh and stay tuned as I will be keeping a Video Log of what I will be doing to the car on Youtube!

This is the video i took just as the car transporter left from delivering it:

I am so very proud to be the owner of a Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley!

:D:D:D

Edit: this is how Talon looks now:

:eek::cool::cool::cool::yum:

Since then Talon has gained more lights, and now has some blue rust free Seat Marbella doors. I had also converted him to Fuel injection, however the parts i used were old and worn so now it is back on Carburettor.

This thread has its ups and downs but through the years Talon and myself have pulled through.

When you are done reading this thread, be sure to check out the little red scrap yard rescued Seat Marbella thread and also Project Fallout!

Peace all and enjoy the thread, videos and pictures!
ok so the alternator is missing.

so i got the nice 90 amp alternator from ebay today. so i ripped the alternator from out of the grey panda to do some comparing.

looks good..

so there's a bit of a size difference in length:
2014-02-11_17_19_55.jpg

not to mention the extra mount point.

and the pulleys. older one has the single V belt with the fan blades externally. with the newer alternator having the multi V belt and 2 internal fans.

while both held in the vice on the front mounts, it looks like the 2 armature shafts are the same length.

ahh this looks good. both are the same size.

well if i am going to put this on Talon then i may as well give it a good going over so i want to get the bearings out and grease them, give the unit a bit of a clean and then maybe a splash of colour.

so it starts. how to rip and alternator down:

inspecting the slip rings.. not bad.

brushes look like new!

right. to split the alternator in two you have to break the 3 output connections from the winding to the diode pack. this alternator is a 3 phase type (hence the 3 outputs from the windings). the more modern ones can be 6 phase or more!

and it is split. now to re grease the bearings and stick it all back together.

now to re-solder the 3 outputs back to the diode pack.

nice.. that should do it

yeah, loads of brush left

now for that annoying little cap that goes over the brushes. not the little plastic tag..

push this bit with a small screw driver to pop it off

single vbelt pulley fitted with a small spacer behind it from off the old alternator.

and now for the paint job:

plastic cover back on.. job done!

ready to fit tomorrow.. on Talon!

Epic work John!

What was the alternator originally off?

its from off a punto 1.2 with aircon and electric power steering.

its fitted to Talon now.. white headlights.. super bright. everything turned on with no battery connected and the engine at idle results in the voltage sat at 12.0v exactly. over the 9.3 volts the 45amp alternator sat at.

vid going up soon.. soon as i get in the house. computer in the garage was the best thing i ever did... that and the burner. lovely and toasty in here :)

John

Fantastic stuff, but I am suprised with all your electrical know how that your house doesn't run on 12 volts driven by umpteen alternators and a wind turbine.

If you get bored this weekend come and build a 12v wind farm at my house in Chesterfield so I can save money to rebuild my 4x4..

Please.. go on you know you want to.

Dave

12v is too low.. too many amps needed to get 240v. i would do everything at 48v

heres is the best way to explain it.. 8kw (8000watts) being drawn from a 240v inverter (yes they do exist!) would be a whopping 666 Amps.

cable melting goodness.

24v would be half the amps, so 333 amps would be needed to pull 8kw.

but at 48v, you only need 166 amps. still a lot but way more doable.

also if you wanted to go windfarm and inverter tech.. id get a low frequency inverter.. the high frequency ones just are not up to the challenge.

ive done my homework on this... it will be my next big project... should i ever get this babington burner built.. oh and the grey panda road running good!

Yeah..... What he just said.

Can you incorporate a flux capacitor ?

With apologies to onemanmade: I dinnae think the engines can take it, cap'n...! :D

Okay, I know it's the wrong film: but I'll be back in a minute with something I think quite cool...! :)

It's the Lego Back to the Future set (that I sadly bought Mrs homeward for Christmas: as she's a big fan of the films...): that enables you to build all three iterations of the DeLorean. Look, she's even got Doc on a hoverboard...!
