Hi

I know this is a fiat forum but as not getting much help on the iveco forum thought I would try. I have an 02 Iveco 2.8JTD Unijet Engine No.8140.43s which is used is some Fiats after changed the timing belt and lined everything up it turns over but doesn't fire. I was hoping that maybe somebody on here had some ideas as to what I have maybe done wrong as the best help I have had so far is probably bent valves and knackered engine.

Did you remove or move the cam position sensor mounted on the camshaft cover and facing to the back of the camshaft toothed pulley?
The distance and position of the sensor relative to the pulley is very important and can be a source of non or poor starting if out of adjustment.
Don't have the settings to hand as I marked the position before I moved it on my 2.8jtd but someone told me that they can cause problems.
May be worth checking? If there weren't any load bangs when you turned it over fingers crossed all's well in the timing department. I always turn the engine over by hand before daring to try it on the starter!

Cheers for that I will have a check and see if I can find where it should be and fingers crossed. When I tried to start up it had no loud bangs or knocks but when I try to manual rotate the engine it will only rotate so far before it feels as if it locks against something (probably me doing something wrong) but when I turn the key all the pulleys turn but fails to fire.

The compression will give resistance as each piston reaches the top, you should feel it build up like a bicycle pump at the end of its travel and then give way. if you turn it over and each piston feels the same then its likely the valves are ok. The cam sensor gap is only about 1mm-1.2mm.

You haven't inadvertently bumped the emergency fuel cutoff switch, which I assume Ivecos would also have, located up on the firewall near the battery on a Ducato.
Should only cutout when there is an impact although I have heard of them activating/cutting out after hitting a large pothole or similar but could be the cause if it turns over ok with the starter.
From the Fiat eLearn -
Safety inertia switch
The vehicle is fitted with a safety inertia switch located on the engine bay on the dashboard wall near the battery to increase vehicle occupant safety during crashes.
The sensor reduces the possibility of fire (due to emerging fuel) by deactivating the axiliary pump that feeds the injection circuit.

Simply press the switch until it clicks home to restore the auxiliary pump earth connection.

If a smell of fuel or fuel system leaks are noted after even an apparently slight impact, do not reset the inertia switch but find and repair the fault to prevent the risk of fire.
1 - Inertia switch assembly. See Picture.
2 - Sheath.
3 - Button.
4 - Upper side.
5 - Engagement side.
6 - Permanent magnet.
C - Shared terminal
7 - Permanent magnet seat.
8 - Steel ball.
N.C. - Normally closed contact.
N.O. - Normally open contact.

There is a sprung woodruff key on these which many mechanics commonly let slip as it is easily done. This knocks out the timing. Some will run and smoke, some won't run at all. You'll have to pop and injector and throw a rod down so you can manually time it.

If it is locking, it sounds like the timing has slipped.
 
Cheers for the help a couple of posts helped but unfortunately as it turns out 2 valves were shot at.
