afternoon everyone,

after a thorough service and checkover it turns out i've got a porous sump giving me a gentle oil leak.

is the only thing to do swap it? or can it be patched up in some way?
Is it a common issue? its a late 94.

Josh

I've heard of this problem quite alot on Puntos, but this is the first time I've heard it associated with Pandas.
Who'd have thought something full of oil would rust? :p

I think sump from Punto MK1 1.1 (Punto 55) has got the same (but not for 99%) because Punto 1.2 has got different a little bit.
If it's one whole, you can clean that place from oil, put short screew (like for plastic/wood one) and put some special high temp glue on it....will sort it for now...then you must find other one...

Presume it's a steel sump-

Take the sump off the car, find the leak, and mark.
clean all paint and oil off the metal,

Where the leak is tap down a small hollow,
clean and heat with a blowlamp, flux the metal, and cover
with a pool of lead solder. Cool down clean and repaint.

Had to do this on a 2001 ford focus.

Yup, sumps are about as thick and strong as sugar paper.

Patching them doesn't work too well as they just rot through somewhere else after they reach their life expectancy.

As for removal and re-fitting. It's easy, make sure you clean ALL the old sealant away and then wipe the faces of the sump and engine down with solvent/thinners.

You'll never seal properly with a bad refit and if your unlucky could pour oil allover your clutch...aswell as cease the engine.

Thanks alot or all the replies.

Luckily it's quite high on the sump meaning it only starts leaking on the move so i know where the rusty patch is.

not wanting to sound like i'm ignoring advice, but i may have a dabble patching it up as a very temporary solution with something before going to drastic methods

ta again
