Off Topic iPad Sat Nav

Whilst planning the Euro trip, came across NavFree for iPad, works great on 3g GPS iPad, i am sure it can be used as a map on non 3g.

Its free and countries are being added constantly.

Do you have a decent in car charger for the 500 ?
Also - on your mobile sim provider is the broadband unlimited ?
I often wonder how hungry the bandwidth is on the Sat Nav 'refreshs'.
In addition, my mobile phone provider said that the overseas broadband is only free if its with a 'sister' partner.

Realistically, you shouldn't need to have a constant data connection, you could easily download the maps via WiFi before leaving and just use GPS to plot your location on the already downloaded map. Roads are unlikely to change whilst you are driving so I can't see any need for a constant data connection, TomTom/Garmin etc don't need it.

That was the selling point for Nokia over iphone with its 'Maps' feature. Even though I have a Nokia E51 (old now) I wasn't able to see the screen properly walking around Spain recently and ended up using a map. At least it's cheaper that 'losing' an ipad if someone takes a fancy to it. :)

no sim/data feed required. NavFree are full maps downloaded on the iPad, the GPS tracking is very fast and battery lasts ages, yes we do have a iPhone charger which I may try on the iPad.

btw: couple of years back i bought a car iphone charger of ebay, tried it on a spare iPod which blew up, it taught me to go for "Made for iPhone" products only.

I did a bit of researching before I went to Spain this year, to get a satnav for my Android phone, ended up with Sygic. The Iberia map was 19.99 euros. I'd recommend it. It worked brilliant.

BTW, Mallorca was full of 1.4 Lounge hire cars....

If you really have nothing to do and have access to an iPad, download "Fiat Source" from app store - its more for the American market.

Good sound track. Did come across it on the US 500 site - I did think of you ! - good place for it here.:)

Arorat - going back to the thread title - why do you need a ipad as a sat nav  - is the iphone not good enough ? I'm trying to imagine the size of it stuck onto the dash blocking up the vents and the controls.:)

yes just imagine, its like a 50" TV in a small front room :)

Good question re satnav... some history, I am into technology and have been missing out on the iPad bandwagon (although our iPhones are v1 on data/edge not 3g), anyway bought the iPad with 3G (which has GPS). It made sense to download the free maps on iPad, prob won't use it much but nice to have maps on storage. Also will be using free wifi in hotels to catch up on emails and on forum laughing at Maxi's misery, telling people to Google first and then ask questions.

Oh another good reason is I detest spending money with tomtom, its time they changed their model and started giving some stuff for cheap, what they are doing now is too little too late. Quite sadly watch Google (and Nokia) obliterate tomtom with free maps for pod/pad devices. Navigation is becoming a right not a privilege.

The iphone that I got (got it for free because I spend too much money with Vodaphone) is a 3GS. Not a great phone but a great 'plaything'. I've recently being offered a free iphone 4 if I switch to a different mobile phone provider (lock in for 18months - ouch). The 'new' iphone 4 comes in white so it will match the white ambiance if you are into colour co-ordination.
I mounted the iphone 3Gs on the dash in this position. I've no idea where you're going to put your ipad unless your OH offers to hold it whilst your are driving. :)
Re the 'right' thing I would probably say that it's a necessity if you're driving in a place like the US where they all seem to have 'big cars'. They like to tailgate on motorways with no hard shoulders which I experienced on a trip in JFK in a hired car. Thankfully a Sat Nav was fitted as standard which helps when your conditions deteriorate. G** help you if you break down !
Does your brother have a built in Sat Nav on his Carerra ? :D
