1st and 2nd crunch when changing down

I have recently bought a 51 Bravo. It is in very good condition and was supplied with a book of receipts for jobs its had done, including new timing belt less than 2 years ago. Nothing suspicious looking through the MOT history either.
It drives fine, except when I have to change down into 1st or 2nd. It crunches and sometimes refuses to locate. If I release and dip the clutch again it usually fixes it, but obviously slowing at red lights in 4th and dropping to 2nd, having to release again in 4th isn't a great idea!
Any ideas what it might be?
