Hi all.

I fitted a new radio cd unit into my neighbors 51 plate punto the other night but this evening he has called to say none of the instruments are working. No speedo no fuel guage or warning lights etc. I am not sure if fitting the new radio is relavent or not as after removing it again this evening the fault still remains. I have never seen anything like this. The indicators flash but the arrows on the instrument cluster dont. All very wierd and making it worse is that the guy who owns the car thinks I have somehow done this on purpose as a joke. ( I wish I was that clever) Has anyone got any ideas ?

Thanks

Yes you would be right I just plugged it straight in. It came out of another punto though. Without going outside to look I am not sure on the head unit. Think it was a sony.

Hi, it may of popped a fuse,

Let this chap pay to have things fitted in future,

if he thinks youve done this on purpose ignore him in future,

iget loads of people asking me to fit stereos etc, ive learnt to say NO sorry icarnt/dont know how to fit them, its not nice to tell lies but id sooner fob em off to save any comeback you never knows the car couid be fubard to start with and there looking for scape goat to get a cheapy fix,

Q: are the Brake lights working.

reason why iask is,

brake light is on same circuit as instrument panel fuse according to Autodata.

If you knew what a practical joker my neighbour is I perhaps you would have come to the same conclusion.I do look after him re payment, being a plumber I do jobs in return.

Hi,
sorry imiss read op post wrong,
it apeared he was being blaimed for doing this on purpose,

Quote. (All very wierd and making it worse is that the guy who owns the car thinks I have somehow done this on purpose as a joke. ( I wish I was that clever)

it is very easy for anyone to make mistakes with wiring radios in on puntos

Thanks Oldhammer. It would seem the fuse for the brake lights has blown but continues to blow when replaced so I will be looking into this. You were right, initially I was getting the grief for deliberately engineering this fault !! Long story but this is a car I sold last year and apparently the lifetime warranty is still valid  Anyway I will look into whats taking the fuse, hopefully I can sort it.

iwouid unplug fuse for radio then replace fuse for brake lights and see what
happens,

idont think its radio thats caused this, but imight be wrong,
id check the wiring in tailgate see if anywiring is broke or chaffed,
or disconect high level brake lamp,

Hi
Thanks for all the help. The radio had no influence on this at all. Think that was a bit of a red hearing ! The fuse blew due to a short in the rear light cluster. That is now sorted. Fuse no longer blows. Job done. Well almost. The airbag light has now come on. Prob as a result of a spike or something when the fuse went. Anyway I am looking to getting this sorted later today. This is obviously covered under the lifetime warranty. My lifetime, not the cars !!

Charge the battery, possibly causing the airbag fault if low, which could be the case if you've been fiddling with the ignition on but without the engine running keeping it charged (y)

your mate owes' you a few beers ithink,

glad to hear you got this issue sorted,

if you get anymore punto's in for sale give us a shout,
lifetime guarantee on one of these is awesome,

iwouidnt hand out amonths warranty on one of these things,. :D

The punto is gay when it comes to airbag lights
Unlike some other fiat models, if the fault is present for 3 starts ups after the light coming on - it'll go off

But nooo..... not the punto (swine eh:p)

If the battery gets to low - the airbag ecu shuts down till a reset is done

Annoying if the car still starts tho.... but its happened to me
cranking meant voltage too low and - Airbag light on :(

Ziggy

weird  ive run punto's with no alternator conected never had airbag light problem after everything was back on, (elecy steering didnt like this)

ithink the airbag ecu only gets moody if it detects abreak in circuit or short to earth,

this is was on mk2a mind maybe mk2b is more advanced (mood'ier) ?
