Technical Input shaft bearing renewal

Hi can you tell me the exact Loctite sealant as dont want to use wrong one Many Thanks.

This is the one I used. Worked perfectly.
The one that Ziggy has posted is cheaper though and you can pick it up straight away from your local halfords so it could be more convenient.

Can this be done without taking the hole gearbox out?

I did it by taking out only the gear selector part of the gearbox. So yes, it can be done, but both ways have different hassles.

Hi had so say mechanic put clutch in my punto 2 weeks ago then noticed oil leak under bell housing and clutch starting to slip , Took it back and i think he did nothing said that should be ok now ! since then keeps fobbing me off saying has to much work on ! I am going to have a go myself got seals and bearing but the clutch is new do you think i will need to replace it ! or will it dry out after new seals replaced Hope you can help Many Thanks .

Normally the clutch is fiberous - so it'll absorb the oil and ruin it

Most times you replace, dont know how well a clean would go to be honest

Tbh tho - the mechanic didnt fix the problem - contact your local trading standards, they should give you the correct guidance there

its still tho - you should check the input shaft for play or signs of leaks, when ever the clutch is replaced....

Thanks Ziggy but I had no receipt for job as he done it from his home , I got clutch and oil 70 pounds and gave him 100 pounds to change Clutch !

You paid £100 for the work?
thats seriously cheap.....

The average is about £200......

so labour was about £40 for him... for 4 hours.... thats cheap!

I'm going to replace the oil seal and bearing again while I have the bell housing off due to clutch failure.

Looks like I used Loctite 574 50ml previously.

Loctite 5188 looks to be better but my seals have held up fine on the cheaper stuff.

Looking to procure another gearbox input shaft oil seal as ebay is charging what look to be inflated prices for the part, Fiat P/N is 40004820

Or -- assuming the seal is still "readeable" -- try a bearing stockist.

I've never, ever, used a locking compound on an oil seal.

Hi folks,

This is my first post, but I didn't want to start a new thread as there are quite a few on this subject, and this is the best one I've found by far.

Anyway - my gearbox has blown a pretty big hole in itself (I'll post a photo tonight), and I'm thinking of buying a cheap gearbox from a scrapper and cleaning it up, rather than paying for a reconditioned one. My plan is to replace the bearings and seals and give it a good clean before deciding whether to fit it myself.

I'm a complete novice so I'll be using this thread for reference, and I'll post pictures of the process, if only for the entertainment value. I'll hopefully have a second-hand box in the next couple of days...

To replace all the bearings is no easy feat there

Never stripped a box down, but you may need a press to get bearings in and out

If you say pay £100 for a dodgey box, a repair kit is £80 on ebay, thats £180

where as for £40 more like me, i paid £220 for a recon box, painted, rebuilt

Ok. Maybe I need to think about it a bit longer then. The warranty issue is probably the biggest reason to buy reconditioned. Thanks for the advice.

Anyway, here's the damage. I may have been wrong when I said it blew a hole in itself. The damage is right at the front of the casing in the most vulnerable part of the box, and it still runs in every gear (although I'm not driving it for obvious reasons), so maybe the damage was caused by hitting something in the road. What do you reckon?

great set of pictures gave me the confidence to do it my self. i would say if your competent enough to to remove the gearbox your self then you should have no probs doing the input bearing and seal as well by using these pics.

It appears I'm having this problem.

I had my clutch replaced for £50 took around 1 hour and 30 minutes (in the dark, with torch light only). The original clutch was covered in gearbox oil.

However, my gearbox is a lot louder than usual even in 3rd gear. Could this indicate weather the main bearings could also be at fault? Perhaps I'm being paranoid.

Or would the Input shaft bearings be a problem?

Also, would this fault with the gearbox cause a "jerky" feel when driving slowly in low gears? Mine seems to be going that way.

Clutch covered with gearbox oil points to the input shaft bearing seal having failed, which, in turn, implicates the input shaft bearing. A generally noisy box might point to low gearbox oil levels. The input shaft bearing generally gives off a noise in neutral with the clutch up.

Basically, you can't. Generally, though, the input shaft bearing goes early in Puntos -- the reason is a bit of a mystery as it doesn't happen on Centos with the same box. 2 seperate lines, one fitting cheapo bearings?
