Induction options 1.2 Stilo

I think there's merit in Phils' suggestion, certainly an easy one to accomplish and if you think about it there's only one cut on the original induction pipe.

You'd need to consider providing some additional support to the filter - and perhaps some shrouding - but chances are on most induction options you'll have to do that anyway.

I'd reckon on used standard induction pipes turning up on eBay reasonably often (cunningly hidden amongst stilo wheelnuts on breakers etc) so worth the risk IMHO - but it's not my car ;) How much to Fiat charge for a new bit - scary money

It'd mean having the cold air feed going further though behind or around the radiator, which I'd need to investigate in terms of space.
Not really, no. In my crazy plan if you use the JTD spec bits you'll be drawing air into the n/s front from the area where the intercooler would be, handily the intercooler pipework has to come through under the chassis leg to get to the engine so you'd use that gap (suitably ducted) to feed cold air to the induction kit :idea3:
See below for piccie of the intercooler pipe coming through under the battery tray which might give you an idea of what I mean:

Cheers for the suggestions, shall do some investigating and see what's what. Determined to get the induction done before my birthday at the end of next month :D

Well I'm here if you need a bracket ..god forbid made enough of them for induction kits in the past ;) just need length and hole centres and hole sizes thats all ..if you need to twist it just place it in a vice and slot an adjustable spanner over it and twist away ..jobs a good un..will be a birthday pressie for you..let me know..(y)

Well, the bits have arrived and I'm going to have a go on Friday to try and fit them. I think I may have misjudged the size of the pipe and the filter itself is pretty big BUT I think I should hopefully be able to wangle it into position. Failing that, plan (B) will be executed and I'll get another part or two to sort it but hopefully that won't be called for.

Anyway, I'll attach some pics of what essentially makes up my home brew kit (45 degree 76mm alloy tube and Apiro Torque Stainless Steel Twin Cone filter)...

Basically at the moment I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall. Every damn thing I'm doing with this DIY option seems to go wrong, like today when I finally got the nerve to cut the pipe to put the kit on and low and behold the standard intake has about 3-5mm (it's not evenly spread by any means) layer of resin around the interior of part of the pipe :(

3 hours of trying to make it fit by adjusting the t-piece I had to get after the stuff pictured and removing and smoothing out the resin I get precisely no where. I just about get them to connect and it won't stay together :(

So, have ordered ANOTHER part, this time a 90 degree silicone elbow to go onto the throttle body and then onto a NEW t-piece. Oh and I can't get a reducer that'll go onto the throttle body so the 90 degree pipe needs to be 54mm to fit onto that but the t-piece is 51 because the next one up is bewilderingly 63? I mean w...t...m...f?! Why do none of the sizes of pipe correspond so you can actually fit them together?! How does that make ANY sense?!

I...hate...induction. Buy a fricking universal or an off the shelf item everyone unless you have a garage or a full on tooling system to build your own damn kit. Either that or the patience of a person trying to thread a needle in the dark with their hands tied behind their back.

On the upside, my car now has an Irn Bru bottle acting as an oil catch tank and a sock as an air filter. Woo...hoo(!)

If hoses just doesn't fit right at the end ... just keep to standard box... then buy an induction kit mate!

I know is a small lost, but you don' want power lost either!

Well, the issue is though that to put the bits on that I have, I had to cut the intake pipe. So it's now an impossibility to go back to standard unless I buy a new intake pipe or source one from a scrappy and as far as I know 1.2/1.4 intake pipes aren't the most common down there even if it's the same one for the Stilo and GP.

Hopefully this 90 degree pipe will do and I can smooth the join between the connections enough for it not to be an issue. Emphasis on the word "hopefully" by the way.

Right, it's finally on - pics will follow tomorrow as it got dark when I had finished

Sounds brilliant though, almost rasps when you hit 2000rpm and after 3000 or so it starts to howl rather interestingly :D Still though, it's not a task I'll be taking up again the next time I put induction onto a car :p

May well do that at some point, through a tunnel will be a laugh :D

Here's some pics - the view through the original intake...

Nearest I can compare it to is this vid I saw of a 1.4 with a GSR kit...

Oh and excuse the oil on the rocker cover, that's from a previous Arnold Clark special service where they don't use a funnel to top up the oil

Still, well happy with the final result :)

Tidy up those clips that man looks like a pair of rabbits ears ;) ..OK I know I'm a picky git..

:O looks tidy that :D !

I don't use a funnel either, just be extremely careful :D

Cheers. Aye, haven't stopped smiling since I put it on - sounds so different and it does feel a little different to drive though maybe that's the placebo affect of the extra noise :D

Have an idea of maybe putting a neat vent in the bonnet above the filter to channel more cold air to it when I get the rest of the body work sorted. Basically a less motor sport version of what Dave did to his Rally Cinq, but at the moment all seems well :)

Must say, looks a tidy job!!!!! (y)

despite the problems, doesn't it feel good to make something yourself? ;)

Cheers. It does, but I have to say it was like I'd solve one issue and then another would wade up to chin me one. Like when I went to pop the rocker cover breather pipe on and even though it's 25mm across, it wouldn't go on the t-piece. Had to cut it at the end then put a reinforced small length of tube to bridge the gap. Would've replaced the whole pipe but there's a tiny pipe comes off that black bank behind the block and attaches to the main pipe which looked awkward to replace so decided on an easy option :)

With the end result I am chuffed though. I came in at around the £90 mark which is still more than £60 down on a GSR and only £20 above a 57i, which given the extra/replacement parts I had to buy is pretty decent. Have to say though, if I get the chance to build one again I'll certainly investigate it and research it even more than I did with this to avoid the majority of head scratching moments :D
