Hi,

I bought a Seicento Sporting about a year ago. When bought it would occasionally show a warning light but this didn't make any difference to the running of the car. Now it's having a problem. If I drive the car for over about 4 or 5 miles, then it will start to hiccup a bit. It seems like the car loses power for a split second and then picks back up again. Sometimes this makes the warning light come on, sometimes not. I've recently put more oil in the car, although it seemed to be doing this before that happened.

I'm not really sure what's wrong, but I guessed that the ECU would be able to tell me. I've bought all the kit I'd need to connect a bluetooth ECU reader to the car. Here's what I've bought:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004KL0I9I a bluetooth ECU reader
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001C1MNTM an ODB2 VAG cable

I also got what was described as an "OBD to OBD2 Car Diagnostic Adapter Cable for Alfa Romeo" from ebay.

This item said in its description that it's an ODB 3 pin to ODB2 16 pin diagnostic cable which should fit a Fiat.

My intention is to use the bluetooth ECU reader and the "Torque" app for Android to read the car's ECU and hopefully get an error code out of it. If necessary I might even have to drive around a bit until I get the symptoms and warning light, then check for the error. If that doesn't work then I'll use the USB cable to connect it to a laptop.

What I need some help with, is the adapter cable. As you can see above, it has crocodile clips and is supposed to be connected to a 12v power source, which from what I can gather, can be the car's battery.

I've read this post about how to connect an ECU reader to a Seicento: https://www.fiatforum.com/cinquecento-seicento-guides/238241-reading-spi-ecu-data-logging.html

but this doesn't really give me any information on what's the "right" way to connect it to the battery. I don't know much about car electrics, and I'm not sure how to do this without somehow electrocuting myself

So, how do I connect the adapter cable to the car without killing myself?! Help me, fiat forum!

red onto the positive terminal and black on the negative aka earth terminal

id just either get a code reader to see if there are any codes or use a modus (expensive) to run diagnostics while you drive the car that or a garage can do it
