General How overpriced is the 500?

Show me a car (Mini excepted) in the same class that is more expensive than the 500.....

Vauxhall corsa, toyota aygo, renault clio, smart car 2,

If you go for the same specs, alloys, blue and me (or equivalent), steering wheel controls, leather seats..... They'r all more expensive.

Ummm lets start here. Corsa is a class above as is the Clio. The Aygo is far cheaper than the 500. the Smart is a different class as well IMHO plus most of them are cheaper than the 500.

I looked at a Renault in Feb 2009 and a neighbour and a brother-in-law who had both bought new ones said I was mad to even consider one. There was a Documentary about 2 weeks ago
http://www.cartell.ie/2011/05/renault-ireland-statement-concerning-electric-window-fault/
and during the time 'we' had a thread going about electric windows on the 500. It put our 'little' issues in perspective :).

The 'Cup' chasis has got great praise. On the 'back to back' tests on the A500 with the Twingo, the renault had better poise but because the A500 has underdeclared its BHP it won the 'day'. I wouldn't post the youtube since this is your thread but here's an article if you can take jeremy with a 'pinch of salt'.

I cann't comment on the Clio but that's probably a better a car IF you are prepared for the service levels that have been experienced as per the documentary on RTE. I heard from another FF member (thank you) a few weeks back that there will be 1 possibly 2 dealers in NI - so if I end up with a good value A500 I only have to drive 100 miles to get it serviced. (y)
So for me the A500 would win hands down in a 'head to head' with Renault.

I think we're getting a bit off topic but I understand where you're coming from :)

Ive had another look around and still cant find many cheaper cars with the same spec. Remember im looking at sport trim, 1.4 16v engine with 100hp or more, leather seats, blue tooth hands free, ESP + ASR (or equivalent). Front and rear discs. I know specs vary from one manufacture to the next but most other very small cars dont even have those options. The next small cars are things like corsas and clios which, when speced up like my 500, they cost a lot more.

Like I said, the Clio and Corsa are a class above in terms of size......

Yes, but most smaller cars have a lower spec than the 500. So you could say other smaller cars are are in the class below due to the spec.

But it's silly to go comparing the price of cars that are bigger than the 500, of course they're going to be more expensive.......

Right enough is enough. This happens way too often so I'm leaving you sad tossers to it. Nice knowing some of you
What is enough? If you are referring to me as a tosser because I just so happened to READ what YOU posted up, then what is the problem with that

Or can't you just accept you weren't comparing what you thought you were comparing against. Simple mistake to make ;)

I suggest you apologise now if the above is the case - thanks :)

I certainly wouldn't be expecting Draigflag to apologise given all that's happened to date. Aside from the fact that the A500 is an integral part of the 500 range - I enjoy Draigflag's inputs and in particular the update on the Twin Air test run (y) along with many more. I expect to see you back on-line when you've recharged the batteries (y).

So it's OK for Draigflag to call people tossers purely because someone spotted the gaping hole in his "argument"

I think some people who skim over posts or who have only been here for a relatively short while haven't had the chance of seeing Paul at his best. He simply throws out some poorly reasoned post and when someone calls him out on it he either throws a hissy fit if that someone is a mod and he can't have an argument with them or he continues on and waits till his fanclub turns up to gang up on people. It really gets annoying when the forum turns like this because it becomes more of a popularity thing than actually having any factual evidence to prove your point.

Not trying to crawl here, but his way of posting is the antithesis to yours Michael, you will search the net to find something which proves/backs up your point and 99% of the time you read it first to see whether it actually makes sense. Even on the thread where we had that nice big argument I could understand where you were coming from, I just simply disagreed with you.

I'm surprised you don't feel that he should apologise for calling me and Stu tossers......

Anyway back on topic please :)

On the short time that I have been here I have seen quite a few strides in more mature responses. Many thanks for the compliments. Given that this is a thread about 'is a 500 really worth buying' and is 'a 500 a good bet going forward' - this is a very topical thread given our current 'climate'.

I have started some threads for my own personal 'gain' but this one I can see was started for the benefit of the FF and would encourage some prospective 500 owners to 'sign on the dotted line'.

This picture ironically was sourced by your 'antiThesis' and I thought it symbolic of reaching out...

Then its a bit silly to go comparing a well specced car with other 'lower specced' cars just because of its physical size.

My dad bought a LHD 2010 Corsa automatic to replace his 'hard to park' guzzler Lexus last year. He let me :) have a drive of it and was relieved when I managed to park his 'new' car in one piece back in the narrow underground car park. I had encouraged him to buy a 500 but it all 'fell on deaf ears'. The Corsa has 5 seats ! , 5 doors (ok a bit handy), didn't like the automatic gearbox, felt quite a sizeable car (essentially a super mini), unusual triangular windows in the 'corners of the windscreen area', don't know about mpg. A to B - didn't do it for me. Providing the Spanish authories allow him to continue driving next year- he'll get bored with the car and change it again next year.

Back to the original question, I bought my 500 in 2008 (Sport, no extras a shade under 10K). Now the same car is just over 11K. Even with the VAT hike it doesn't add up. The cost of everything is up and the salaries are stagnant. Most people will think twice in parting with their money for any car. I chipped my 500 last year for ex-demo Punto Abarth. Had only 300miles on the clock, drives like a dream, got decent px for the 500 and it cost me £500 more than the the new Lounge. It did help that the Punto was priced for a quick sell as they had new Evo demonstrators coming in tho... Now even ordinary 1.2 Evo is 14K  It only shows, as with Maxi's scrappage, you have to be buying at the right time ;) So yes, I do think it is overpriced but then everything is these days!

But we're talking about cars in the same segment  Of course a Clio for the same money is going to be less well equipped! It's a bigger car. Of course you'll get more for your money in a 500 than you will in say a Focus because for the same money you'll get a top of the range 500 or a bottom of the range focus, that's the way it works and not an indication of poor value for money.

Maxi time to start a new topic, we have gone over the bell curve for fun. Opinions are turning into war :)

Anyway are you buying a new 500 when time is up ?
