Usually semi syn. no more viscous than 5W - 30, especially regarding Fiat hyd. tappets. Changed at no more than 6k miles, not because the oil has deteriorated , but the standard of filtration is quite poor, so the oil is carrying lots of damaging particles.
So if someone could recommend a decent filter I would be happy to let it go to say 10k.

I s there a particular reason why you use 0w-30 or is that what was recommended for your car only the grade of oil recommended for my 150bhp is 5w-40
It was recommended by Castrol and Nationwide Autocentres offered it as an oil upgrade with 12 months free top ups for just £25 extra (on a standard service).

I was really impressed as startup clatter basically vanished and oil consumption is close to zero with no oil leaks. The engine revs like you wouldn't believe  The only thing I was a bit disappointed in was I didn't notice an improvement in mpg (although that could be due to other factors)

I'm on my 3rd year with it now (y)

Right, just to make things clear - i never said a thing against using the highest quality oils, and never said that high quality oil contributed to my engine failure.
So people, always use the best oil you can afford basically and change it as often as you think is reasonable!

What size engine did you have?

I ask because I had a 1.8 and had a conrod **** out the side of the block. The warrenty engineer tried to blame it on oil starvation, but I compiled a technical report and they agreed with me; it was down to a faulty manufacturing defect. However, Fiat still maintain that it was down to oil starvation (despite my conrod showing no signs that this is true)

What was the decided failure in the end?
