Totally confused by the number of gearbox options.

Yep that's normal.
Have you worked out if you have fiat engine or Peugeot engine?
(-:

You could try

If you post photo of engine that s the easy question.

Do get timing belt kit and water pump replaced as if belt breaks finding engine parts is next to impossible due to vehicle age.

Should have said it is a 1999 model.
It did come with lots of history, not all good, gearbox been repaired and replaced at least a couple of times but the timing belt is fairy recent(?) need to check the dates again!
It was a spur of the moment purchase in June, to use as a dayvan, odd overnighter, as we also have a caravan.
Bought knowing the gearbox struggled to engage first gear when cold but would improve when warm (or warm plus switch off)
Been sitting since purchase and now looking to start using it and hope the gearbox can be improved before going for a refurb gearbox option?
Read lots about cleaning and greasing cables/swivels etc and want to change the oil first .. so many options of oil and quantities to suit the various models!

My guess is that your engine would be a Peugeot. Fiat uses three different machine types. I once had a similar car and it had a Peugeot engine.

Engage 5th gear when the speed is approx. 80km/h due to lubrication.
The oil should be 2-3 deciliters above the maximum value for lubrication.
