Hi. I picked up a neglected little 2009 1.2 Eco last week for me to drive locally and my son's partner to learn in. She was going pretty well considering she'd been standing for months. I treated her to new tyres as one was extremely bald. The tyre guy sorted tracking, checked bearings and suspension. There's the usual advisories on the M oT but things looked ok, he'd expect advisories again this September. Brakes now actually work lol. We've been best mates till yesterday. Went down the road and she's developed an awful thudding clunking noise that's directly related to speed, not revs. I stopped, had a quick look but I'm a mature lady with arthritis so can't crawl around. Yes, I've checked, nothing loose like rear seats, parcel shelf in the boot.
It sounds to be mid way underneath, rhythm of noise like something a child has wedged in a bicycle wheel, completely related to speed. Happens with engine running and in neutral too. Have not tried just pushing her so may be present then too. No oil or fluid leaks visible. Suggestions please? Thank you.

Model
Fiat Panda 1.2 Eco
Year
2009
Mileage
91000
A rhythmic ticking noise directly proportional to road noise may be a nail or stone in the tyre

Unfortunately without jacking the car up and spinning the rear wheels I don't see how we can proceed, if it's anything else
Thank you. I can't see anything in the tyres, whipped trims off and nothing lurking there. Unfortunately, jacking up is beyond me these days. It's a heavier, solid sound not really a soprano metallic sound either but not a thud. Deeper than a wheel bearing!

Is it also present at very slow speed
In it present in reverse as well

Open one rear window

The open the other rear window

Does it sound louder from one of the widows

Thank you. Sounds the same both sides. As soon as the car moves I hear it. Continues exactly the same in neutral, just slows as the car slows and increases when accelerating, stable rate of knocking at a cruise, I got home at 20mph on hazard warning lights. No vibration or pulling felt in steering, through gear lever or pedals, none through the floor or seats, no warning lights ( they light up when ignition on!), temperature guage steady, revs stable and normal. Steering feels normal. Everything works normally just have a drummer lurking.

Get your son and partner to sit in car whilst you’re driving and get them to listen at each open window (and closed as thrumming maybe coming from boot area) and report back…maybe a badly fitting exhaust, from experience, either misaligned hangers or the silencer’s outer skin coming adrift
