My Uno had done 47k, was a '95 N-reg :D

If you fancy a drive to manchester, ive 4 wheels and tyres for sale off my old uno, all with reasonable tread, you can have the lot for a tenner.

And Louie's only round the corner so you can get his parcel shelf whilst your at it! (y)

hi bulldog,
welcome to the forum. Hope you enjoy your time here as much as I do, and there are many people in here who can help you with any UNO queries you may have. Your uno looks in good nick as well

I drive a 97 Uno but was first used and registered on the road in 99. It currently only has around 25000 miles, so its basically still new!!

On friday i bought my first car, a Fiat Uno 1.0L 1993, i''m just waiting for a cover note from my insurer so i can tax the car and then start to drive it!
Excellent, well done! Great first car I think (y) , especially the basic models with no fancy rubbish like power steering, abs, etc. You'll really appricate later on with other cars how good your car control will be

My car has 73800 miles on the clock, is this good or bad? overall the car looks in amazing condition.
All depends on its maintenace. Low milage isn't always a good idea, 'cos some drivers may only still service it every 12k miles even though that may be 2-3 years. Really it should be done every year at the latest.

For example, my Uno is older than yours, but had lower milage (53k), and it showed in the engine's condition (needed work). :bang:

However, it terms of 'generally speaking', it's nothing. The Fiat FIRE engines are meant to be really robust and can easily reach 200k miles. You'll probably find that other parts will fail before the engine actually does.

It is missing a back shelf so i guess i will need to goto the scrapyard and collect one, it also needs a one of those rubber bits between the wing mirror and the door replacing, is this hard to do?
Should be easy. Give it try.
Search ebay for parcel shelf, there's usually always one or two on there for cheap enough.

Could do with some new tyres, how much you guys think these will cost me?
I paid £24 each brand new fitted etc.
You live in Bristol? Call up Bracknell Tyres & Batteries for a price - they're very cheap. It's just a drive down the M4 :)

Cambelt was replaced a 31000 and then again at 39000 (i dont know why), guess i should get this changed, again what kind of price am i looking at?
Don't bother unless something's squeeking. Apparently the "999cc 'FIRE' engine is 'non-interferance' so valves don't hit pistons if the timing belt snaps". So basically, if the cambelt does snap you'll be stranded somewhere at worst (so get break down cover!) so the only cost will be a new belt anyway.

the destributor cap was replaced 23/12/02 so its fairly new
No, no, change that. The part will cost you about £5 and you really can do it yourself :) Just remember to transfer the HT leads over one by one so you get the correct order.

another question would be how much do you think i should have paid for the car? i coughed up £375 i felt it was a good deal
It sounds like there are no problems with it (will pass MOT first time, for example), so yes a very good price I think.

i've heard that the Uno has great acceleration, is this true? what can i look to take on at the traffic lights, i'd love to leave all the chavs for dead,
power-to-weight ratio, yeah.
Not sure about the 1litre injection engines, but I have the 1.1 carb FIRE engine and make loads of things look silly. The key is to at least keep up with other similar sized, but newer/modern cars. It will really annoy them as they've probably spent grands on buying the thing in the first place, whereas you've only spent a few hundred. 'Done up' examples are even better 'cos they've actually made their cars slower with the increased weight of bodykits and audio stuff.

If you really want some fun, remove the rear seats and get a suspension kit ;)

Also, about the rev counter. It's great to have one, and more fun when you want the fun, but you don't really NEED it. You can figure out how to drive from your speed and the gear that you're in. Only a few hundred miles driving and you'll know the car in that way.

Enjoy it!, oh and welcome to the forum :D

Some panels galvanised from 1990 when all acquired plastic hatchback.
Nah I don’t think so. My hatch 93 metal, as is the MK2 Uno Turbo smoothed Tailgate I have knocking around.

The fibre tailgate was only on the MK1 Uno turbo with a spoiler as far as I know.

Regards All,

Thank you ts86 your post was very informative, i just got back from college but unforunatly my insurance cover note didnt arrive today :( maybe it will come tmw altho i wont be able to collect my car as my parents are at work and i have a 4 hour driving lesson.

its good to hear that the engine isnt likly to pack in on my soon, and that when the cambelt goes it wont mean a new engine, i will be sure to phone the garage about the tyres, should make for an interesting trip... lol.

i have bought the pacel shelf and rubber seals i needed from Trevor on the forum, he kindly has posted them to be at what i feel was a reasonable price.

the car was MOTed in late Feb 2005 so it still has 10 months left.

i'm not so keen on replacing the distributor cap myself but i will pick one up and have a little look see at it :)

i have been wondering what is considered a 'mod'... if i got alloys i guess i should inform my insurer but what about things inside the car? may sound stupid but what if i installed a nice stereo? i dont think anything inside the car is covered anyway.

Thanks Again,
Ryan Edge

All my stereo isnt declared nor covered on insurance, although i aparently have £200 audio cover on my policy. Have a look on your insurance :)

Other things like alloys, performance enhancement, and exterior styling to a more serious degree need to be declared :)

Luke, aren't you concerned about theft? I guess you are (!) - what prevention plans do you have in place?

The biggest thing holding me back doing major audio installs (amps, 6x9's, good speakers, etc.) is theft. They can take the stuff, fine, but I don't want to then be paying for broken windows/locks etc. Insurance isn't an option becuase the excess will buy me 2 mint condition Uno's anyway!

Yes, there's alarms and things, but I ain't convinced as the good ones cost too much (£300 or so).

yeah i'm worried about theft too but....well... i just want it anyway, my insurance wont pay me anything what ever happens to my car, the excess is £400.....£400!!!!!

its unreal how much i get ripped off because of some stupid idiots who race around in their modded novas at 30mph....

anyway,
Cheers,

£300 for good sound all hidden – Nah

I have a standard CD Head unit Panasonic CQ-rdp103N (£100), a small pair of JBW in the (MK2) dash – (£35) from Maplin – I think they discontinued these though, and a pair of JPW Mini Monitors fixed to the parcel shelf (£10 ish off e-bay these days), hidden by a Cut down “long rug” (£3 from what everyone wants LOL). I get a grate stealth sound for less then £150.

OK it won’t sound nearly as loud as the Guys with subs, but won’t cost nearly as much. You can always extend later.

I have an AMP I hook up on special occasions to drive the JPW’s a bit harder. I made a quick release meck to only takes a min to hook up, and remove.

Like you guys I’m worried about theft, and it happened to me – no point of thinking of claiming in insurance as eccsee, and loss of NCD won’t will only enlarge the loss.

Glass is cheap and easy to replace BTW.

Regards All,

i just found out my step dads got a CD Players i can have from a car that was written off a few years back, so thats a huge saving. other than that i'm getting some Sony XSF693N speakers, so all in all my sound systems going to cost me £37.50... then maybe a bit more for some cable.

Cheers,
Ryan Edge

P.S some more pics of my car for you all

EDIT: i'm going to have some small pull across cloth to hide the speakers at night.

EDIT2: stupid questions but, 1. where the hell is the cigeret lighter? 2. how do you make the warter pump work??? i had it working before but now i cant find it!

The ciggy lighter is under the flip up panel in the center console - above teh buttons.

Washer jets are on the right hand stalk IIRC. Pull for front, push for rear :)
