Technical Has any one stripped down a 1986 4x4 gearbox before???

Yeah thanks the porter manual I've got doesn't say how to strip it down only to take it out

should give some helpful background,
look in a charity shop or EBAY for an old FIAT manual..,less than a fiver

pre 1990 they actually told you how to fix stuff..!!

EDIT - :idea: I've got an official FIAT rebuild manual for a Mk1 panda.., not sure if the G-box is covered in great detail,
It's something I keep meaning to advertise..,

not had the car since 1987

Take out the selector mechanism noting the orientation of shaft to actuator arm (you'll feel the benefit of this later) then lock it into two gears at the same time to allow a big hammer and socket to get the fifth gear lock nuts off.
After that its pretty straight forward if you're careful to note what goes where on the shafts but the manuals are good if you really, really look at their detail.
Let me know if you need a gasket set and I'll cut you a deal.
Good luck and allow far, far more time than you might think - it just seems to go on and on, to me.

4th syncro has failed can we still get parts ? Or should I rob one from a second hand one off eBay ?

Syncro' rings are still available, if not cross match form CC g/box. I don' thing second hand ones are that easy to get. If on ebay £100+ for untested one.

And that is why partial/full gearbox rebuild can/will cost £200-£600 + labour.


Mathew - do we know what was the fault of that box? Any obvious faulty/ worn parts inside yet?

She's got hot due to lack of oil seized/lost drive towed home and freed off on the way back now makes horrible noise, all gears and syncros need replacing

My 4x4 (Henry) had a reconditioned box fitted. The previous owner is not on here but I'm sure aquamarine could contact wayne and find out who what and where did it?
