hi wondering if anyone can help with stiff gears, on a punto 1.9jtd looking through this site and google it seems a common fault and people have said its 100% the metal plate thingy on top off gear box however mine does not have this metal plate? iv greased and greased and greased everything but no joy the worst movement on the gear stick is left to right. I've also noticed if you hold the gear stick while driving you can feel like a spring action popping out. Never noticed this on previous cars happening so dont think its normal. i Also find sometimes i have to really ram it into 3rd. There doesnt seem any rust on cables or linkages so i dont know whats causing it now.

Hi mate,

If you have a JTD then you have a different box/ linkage set up to the one pictured above.

Remove the battery and then remove the battery tray as per THIS guide.

Then pop off the two ball joints of the two gear selector cables. Make sure they are free to move (ie not in contact wit anything) and then go into the car. Move the gear stick from side to side and up and down. If the movement is still stiff then it is likely that your cables are knackered. They corrode and gum up internally beneath the sheathing.

If its loose/ free, then the problem is with the gear selector or box itself (most likely the selector mechanism on the top of the box.

Look at the rear most cable. follow the selector down and through its housing. At the front you will see a 15mm (iirc) bolt. undo the bolt, remove the washer and push the selector shaft out of the rear of the box. Clean the shaft up with some fine sandpaper or emery cloth. lightly re grease the shaft and replace it. Make sure the nut is done up tight and that the shaft lines up with the key in the selector mechanism that goes between the shaft and the washer.

Hopefully that will all make sense when your looking at the box.

blah blah blah don't wanna quote the whole post

Basically everything Alan has said above is correct and has had to be done to both of my diesel puntos although I never greased the parts before putting them back together as it binds to the plastic washers, I used a dry graphite lubricant which worked really well (y)
