Background to the car, its a 51 reg, 1.2v 8v Petrol Mia.

A couple of weeks back (3 at the most) I filled up with petrol from Sainsbury's (full tank). After a couple of days, the Fuel System Failure light came on (see attachment for symbol, although coloured orangey/yellow). However, the light itself has never permanently stayed on. I think the longest its been on is three days. Light comes on, goes off, comes on, every couple of days

I think i've potentially got a batch of dirty fuel, so i ran the car, got some new fuel, and added some Fuel Injector Cleaner to it as well. Car has been driven around 300mile since the cleaner was added

All was well for about a week, then yesterday, the light came back on, this morning, started the car, it was off, this afternoon, it was on again.

The car hasn't seen any loss in power /performance, and runs and sounds as it did before the light occured. No juddering/jumping or what have you, either at idle or when pulling away. Which, from reading other threads, seems to rule out a misfire (caused by whatever)??

The only blip it has, is when I start the car, it the engine noticeably (from inside the car) judders (can be felt throughout the whole car). For maybe 5 seconds max, then it runs fine, and then never misses a beat. It does seem like it judders more when the engine is cold, as apposed to when its been driven. AGain, when the light is on, sometimes it judders, sometimes it doesn't

Well, there appears to be no major problems. I hear you cry. My only concern is what is it hiding? Is it doing any major damage underneath? As of tonight, the light was still on. I'm off to work tomorrow morning at 8am, I'll report back as to the state of the light when I get in.

What would be your next plan of action?

Cheers fellas

Yarde

Im afraid thats the engine management light which means something has gone wrong, If i were you get the codes read and find out whats happening. Even if it does just flash on and off there will still be codes that have been stored and a decent scanner will be able to pick them up. Cheap lead from ebay and fiat ecu scan will do the job nicely

BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG Bump!

I've finally had enough time (work has been insane) to get someone to look at the car. Its happening tomorrow, yet tonight, coming home from Karate training, the bastard light went off! Will there still be any codes to read or does it clear them when the light is off?

A Decent Reader Will be able to read the stored fault codes

Fiat ECU scan can do this - and so does the Fiat Dealers Examiner Software

A Decent Auto-Spark could probably get the codes too

I mean when you go to fill up with petrol, does the filler cap slurp when you take it off.

If it does, you have a blocked vent filter. It located behind the rear wing up by the filler pipe. If the tank is not venting the fuel pump has to work harder which might explain your juddering.

If it were not for you recently replacing a crappy old filler cap I would say spark plugs or leads are first place to look. The ECU codes will tell a lot.

No mate, no abnormal noises or events when filling up. The cap is the one that's just always been on there as far as I can tell.

My dad took each of the spark plugs out, gave them a quick clean, and nothing looked like it shouldn't. Leads seemed fine as well. Like I said, bloke is coming at 3 today, so should know more after then

Which codes?

Try running the engine at night, peek under the bonnet, look for blue flashes. It's always worthwhile eliminating a set of tired HT leads before replacing the coil pack.

He didn't say. All he said was coil pack issues. He wants to wait and see if the light comes back on, and if it does, he's going to do more tests (his words, not mine) and proceed from there

If the HT cable is not contacting internally the sparks (if any) wont be obvious. If its blown through the insulation the sparks will be obvious especially if its sprayed with a water mist.

I know you will all be going wild with me for not getting the exact codes but i forgot, but the bloke changed ONE of the coilpacks yesterday morning and reset the light. The light was off until tonight when my dad went to put it onto the drive and its came back on!:cry:

He didn't charge me anything for the new coil or the fitting (as he's a friend of the family) incase it didn't solve the problem, then i assume he'll change it back to the original coil that was in. I assume the next step is it try it with the other coil? Failing that, new HT leads?

He has also said that its not uncommon on Fiat's that its a problem within the ECU itself! Is that true? I'm never seen that mentioned on here. Is there anything else that can be tested before trying to troubleshoot the ECU? Which i assume will be god damn expensive? Or do y'all need the codes?
