Technical Front Suspension Knock

Technical Front Suspension Knock

Mine has totally stopped knocking...no matter how many bumps I go over...nothing.

Makes me think it was maybe the bushings and they needed wearing in as they were tight and causing some sort of thud. The Edinburgh roads have fairly put the suspension through its paces anyway...truly appalling!

I've had my brand new Barvo T-Jet 150 Sport exaclty 1 week - tonight it started the knocking noise from the front...my heart sank as I had a Grande Punto Multijet Sporting a few years back with the same problem and the steering rack got replaced under warranty - after 3 months of arguments with the dealer.

Lets hope this time the customer care is better as really cant be bothered having to argue to get proper service....

Otherwise its a cracking car...just wish it had the steering feel of the Ford Focus I traded in on it...then it would be awesome

Guys ,has anyone found any solution to this noise that is listened only when it rains?
In Greece it has started raining these days and the noise is back!
Any ideas?

i get a knocking when i do low speed manouveres.... but only when its wet and im turning... i just put it down to certain parts maybe being wet or somthing and rubbing against each other?

Ours had the dreaded knocking sound. Drop links had been done so it wasnt them. I took it to my local garage (indy) though has an ex Fiat Alfa bloke there who is very good. I thought it sounded a lot like worn ARB bushes (body to bar), as it sounded a lot like my GTA when that had the problem.

He did trace the knock and it was the front brake calipers. How he did it was by kicking / slapping the front tyre quite hard. There was a definite knocking. On pressing the brake pedal (quite hard, ie more than just touching it on) the same kicking no longer produced the noise.

He took the calipers off and coppa slipped the 2 guides. He said they couldnt be too tight or the brakes would seize on. On driving home the noise had completely gone. After 3 or 4 months it has returned, though now if I am braking I have noticed that the noise disappears. Got to be worth a try....

iv also go this knocking noise on my front Drivers side suspension but not on the passenger side..

im going to take the strut off thur/fri and av a look and greece some parts up and just make sure its not rubbing anywhere..

Sounds like a plastic bottle crunching when it makes the noise..

well yeh i know i read it in this thread but it really does sound like that lol.

goin to investigate tomorrow compare whats different on both sides of the car..

Problem is now fixed:

How i fixed it:

took the strut back out and noticed the spring wasnt sitting in its original place on the inner cup moved bout 1cm back.. causing the Orange bung (bump stop) seen in the below photo to sit tight against the inner cup. Since this cup swivels inside the outa cup ( you will know what i mean if you take the strut off)

Car goes over a bump the cup swivels and the bung moves up and down slightly. You can see in the photo of the bump stop (orange) that its black around the top edge. This is what is rubbing on the inner cup.. When the inner cup gets moist it for some reason makes that rubber very soft and sticky thus making a noise...and i also had some of that rubber melted onto the bump stop in the ridge you can see in the middle. obviously rubbed the rubber off the inner cap. i just pealed that off..

Where to greese:
  • orange bump stop around the top just above ridge (rest of the bump stop doesnt go that far into the inner cap) (black part)
  • i also greesed the outa cap (part that sits inside the body of the car) see photo.
  • very top of the shaft where the bump stop is just to allow for movement of the bump stop

Greese between this part here: between top of strut and body of car..

i know this wont fix everyones problem but my antiroll bar drop links were fine and i couldnt see how they would be making a noise at the very top of the strut when two of us bounced the suspension with bonnet open.

Hope this helps some peoples problems...

Sorry to drag this thread up again - however my baby is booked in to have the rattle inspected and identified - my chassis number falls into the recall range in previous page, so naturally this will be my first port of call with Fiat - however, I'm confused as to what's the most likely culprit ?

ARB or suspension ?

The closest comparison sound wise is if you hold a closed ironing board and shake it...

:D

Hi guys. I think I have the exact same problem on my 1.3 mjet GP 08. This is the thread I started about it. https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/256117-suspension-i-think.html
I'm convinced that I have the same problem as Craig. But I have a (it's hard to describe) like a poping/knocking noise over bumps and speed bumps. My thread has more details that includes what fiat has replaced etc. Please tell me if you believe my problem is similar to yours, I'd love to get this sorted. Thanks.

You're no further forward than us Bravo guys

I bet it's worse when it's wet though.

To be honest, it's just as bad whatever the weather. Im praying this greasing will do the job. I have the car booked in with local fiat dealer and I'll ask them to grease just about everything ha. And to double check antiroll bar etc.

since i done exactly what i posted a few posts before this iv had no knocking at all coming from the suspension...

Its was either one of the two things for my car:

The rubber bung inside the suspension rubbing against the yellow part you can see in the photo...

you will need some spring compressors and need to take the strut out like i have on the photos.. the reason it does it on Speed bumps and big drops is the suspension is compressing to nearly its maximum travel and its pushing the rubber stop up inside that yellow bung causing it to rub and make like a popping sound as it brakes free from the yellow bung reason why it does it more when its wet is because the rubber seems to get more sticky in the wet so creating a louder noise like a balloon if you rub your thumb against it it sticks to it and as your thumb brakes from sticking to it it makes a popping/knock noise. So i just greased all the rubber parts in that area where i could see it was rubbing and also the cup that the suspension sit into.

OR

there's a rubber cover that goes over the strut but feels like a plastic (milk bottle sorta sound if you crunch it together in your hand)

i simply pushed the first set of coils into them selves hard to explain so it make it shorter so when the suspension travelled their maximum they werent crushing this plastic which also sound like that noise you get when you bounce off the speed bumps (like a milk bottle been crushed)

after doing them two things never had any issues noise went instantly...

Thanks Craig - given I'm about as mechanical as a house brick - I'll pass that onto Fiat when my car goes in on Tuesday !
