Ford Mondeo ST220 - Anyone got/had one?

I've really taken a shine to the Mondeo ST220, and looking at the possibility of getting one, it doesn't stand out too much, which I like, and they appear to have lots of extras.

If you've had one/used one, what did you think of it?

They don't seem to be that much, around £3,000 to £4,000 for a 2003/2004 plate, and insurance isn't too bad at around £1,200 without searching that well.

Any advice/opinons would be great.

I was slightly worried about the MPG, but having a look online it seems to be around 20 to 30, which isn't too bad, similar to what I was getting in my Punto.

its not that though, its a lot bigger tank, i wouldnt be suprised to see you spend around 80 quid just to fill it at current fuel prices

Can you afford 80 quid a week just on fuel and be happy with a low 20-30mpg return constantly?

And that's 20-30 on a run taking it easy. Giving it beans expects 15 and below. Around town these sort of cars drink fuel.

I'm sure they do a ST TDCI? maybe out of budget though?

At the moment I'm doing less than 100 miles a week, so the cost of filling it up shouldn't be a problem, when I get back to going on duty I'll get my mileage paid, get 40p a mile so might even make money out of it like I do at the moment.

yeah there is a model but is more desirable than the petrol one so will be a lot dearer and probably of higher mileage as they are an obvious choice for the sales rep

I rate the ST TDCI quite highly... good engine... decent ish economy... and comfy seats... can be a little bit noisy in the cabin though but other then that all round goodness!

Do your research on the ST TDCI there are some common (expensive) problems with them. Stopped me getting one in the past.

you would be surprised how quickly you can guzzle fuel at 20mpg
I run around 25-27mpg on my car
i can easily hit the low teens with a little bit of beans
i dont use the car much bar driving to work/shops
filling up just gets boring

I've driven the TDCI version in Estate format and can honestly they are a very nice car. The TDCI offers 150bhp so not quite as powerful as it's petrol version, but with that comes a lot better fuel economy.

Power delivery is very smooth, handling is quite good and steering is quite sharp.

They come with generous amounts of equipment inside too, just about everything is electric, seats included, heated too, a six CD player.

I think you might find the TDCI hold their value better than the petrol versions.

Although i think they look the same there is a hatchback and a saloon version, obviously the hatchback version will give you more boot space.

In all, a very nice car

Hi, I know it's a bit late, but thought it might be useful to anyone reading in the future.

I've had a Mondeo ST220 for 5 years now. It's a 2003 5 speed, and has now done just over 70,000 miles.
This is a superb car, fast and totally reliable. I have only ever a heated seat switch fail, which cost £15.00 to be replaced at my Ford dealer.

I have always had it serviced at my main dealer (Stanways in Lytham St Annes) who have always been very reasonable, and do the cheapest tyres around - £140 for Pirelli P Zero Rossos.

I have averaged 23mpg overall, and my wife averages 28mpg when she uses it. I averaged 30mpg on a trip to London and back at a staedy 70 or so.

If you want economy, don't buy one, and please don't bother with a ST Tdci. Taxi drivers won't touch Mondeo Tdcis because of their high number of problems. Have a look on mondeo forums to see what I mean. I did test drive one, and loved it, but then got back in mine and it was no comparison.

One thing to be aware of is starter problems. Sometimes they can refuse to engage and it is one of these things:

clutch dust jamming it
worn teeth on the starter
worn dual mass flywheel.

Worst case scenario with total failure seems to be about £1000 or so.

In all, totally recommended, best car I have ever had, and i wish it wouldn't get older.
