hi there,

got some new tyres fitted today, and instead of a 65 profile i got a 55 profile, now when a accelerate i get a warning flashing light like when you are wheelspinning, then asb,esp and asr failure came up and it told me to stop.

a turned the asr off and now have no problems but what is wrong and how do i sort it?

is it beacuse the wheel now is a smaller diameter that it playing up :chin:

re: Fitted wrong tyres - now got ABS & ASR failure!

ASR works out what speed you're doing from the wheel rpm but it has no means of knowing what size tyres are fitted.

You should always match profile with wheel size as otherwise, apart from anything else, your Speedo will be out :(

re: Fitted wrong tyres - now got ABS & ASR failure!

The car would have no way of telling that youve put smaller diameter tyres on and assuming you have the same amount of grip it shouldnt make any difference. May just be a coincidence, or something the tyre fitters have knocked/damaged when they changed them over.

re: Fitted wrong tyres - now got ABS & ASR failure!

ASR is way more sophisticated (at least on the Stilo) than many people realize :)

I'm going to stick my neck out and say you've only changed the tyres on one axle (let's assume the front).

ASR takes information from ALL 4 wheels so it will now think the front wheels are spinning and will try to do something about it.

If you brake then ABS will be totally confused as it wont be able to make sense of the rear wheels starting to lock up (this is why ABS is shutting down).

SOLUTIONS
  1. Fit the correct tyres (that's what I'd do)
  2. Fit 'wrong' tyres to the other axle too.

You want to fix this real quick as you'll Stilo will be way safer with the 65 profiles back on.

No one would change the front profile and not the rear....surely??!!
If so then I would agree......it will confuse the poor thing!!!:D

thank you, i should have clicked i done a project on abs and traction control before aswell haha

thanks alot mate

I've seen it happen - many times :) Mostly on older FIATs though.
I remember an Uno that I bought which would pull to the right. I booked in for a wheel alignment, but the real problem was the 155/70/13 tyre on one side and a 'budget' 155/80/13 tyre on the other side...

I think the best was a 155/80/13 on the left, and a 185/60/14 (yes, 14) on the right. So, someone even went to the trouble of fitting a different wheel behind the matching wheel cover... !

Even the difference between almost-worn-out and new tyres can be a problem with ABS/ASR.

You sure this hadn't been entered into the "FIRST TO LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR CAR CONTEST" ;)

Tyre size ?? ESP/ABS Fault

If I have 205/45/17 on the front tyres and 225/45/17 on the rear will this generate an ESP/ABS fault.

Thanks :)

Re: Tyre size ?? ESP/ABS Fault

According to my knowledge, this shouldn't generate any failure. ABS and ESP calculate traction and rotation of all 4 wheels independently, and don't care if you have (one or two) bad or wrong type of tyre. Their one and only job is to balance grip between wheels. (if you have any worn tire ABS or ESP will more often blink because you loose grip, but not display failure.

Also if you get ABS/ESP failure as soon as you start the engine (before your wheels start to move) than how can sensors know that something is wrong with your tires???

I have driven Stilo with same tires that you use without any failure message displayed.
So if you have any failure go and check your car with examiner and it will let you know if there is any problem with sensors or computer.

Re: Tyre size ?? ESP/ABS Fault

ABS is largely independent but ASR/ESP constantly monitors the difference in speed between the wheels and will chop the power or apply brakes independently to the affected wheels if the comparison goes to far out of expected with accompanying dashboard warnings

I can't see the tyre size quoted causing a problem to the ABS/ESP

Re: Tyre size ?? ESP/ABS Fault

Quite right (y)

ASR alone is far more sophisticated than many realize as it even takes account of when the car is cornering.

Fairly crucial to have a full matching tyre set (of the same size)
