Hi I've got a fiat stilo 1.2 active intermmitent immoliliser fault and ECU fault according to the diagnostics man.He said to take the car to fiat. The car starts after trying for five mins.Anyone any ideas?

Ugggghh I hate these intermittent immobiliser faults
Well the diagnostics man didn't tell you very much that you didn't already know did he:)
How about some fault codes?
Are you getting U1600?
Is it a keycode, ECU or aerial fault?
Is it just churning over with no sign of life then just starts?
Do you get dashboard immobiliser/ security warning?

First off It churns over and after 3rd or 4th attempt it fires up.The immobiliser light goes out and it comes up ebd and bleeps.Once it runs it's ok but then when you turn off the engine the same happens again.

Do you have another key? Does the same happen with that?

There are some things you can try
ignition switch aerial.JPG
The key code is picked up by this aerial around the ignition key switch, I'd check the connector there.

A lot of the Code comms have to go through the D4 connector- (see above sticky as to where that is) and again I'd check and clean that connector

If you're getting EBD faults too, it sounds like a voltage issue. Check the battery condition, D4 connector wiring, earth points in the engine bay . . .

I am not a Stilo owner but a Multipla owner and the fault described above is very similar to the problem I am having with my car except mine won't start at all now. I presume the Fiat electronics are going to be similar in each car?

Mine comes up with ABS and/or EBD system faults and sounds healthy enough but just won't start, could it be the battery? I have tried the car with a booster on and it still won't work but maybe the booster isn't sufficient to start it and it needs a healthy battery? I am going to check the earth points and try and find the D4 connector (!?) wiring.

Thanks for a bit of hope.

Hi there i get same fault

Sept i get car security failure loose connection too

It drives fine

I think we'll both most likely need to get a new Engine ECU

Trust me it gets worse the longer you leave it mines been doing it for 7months and now its Horrible you dont know if its gonna start or not and sometimes it can take a day to start working again......

Whats the cause of U1600 btw ?

I think i might of seen that code before on my own diag with my friends laptop / connector

Would it be wise to get my own like connector for the car so that i can scan for faults myself via laptop ?

Would that pickup this immobiliser fault or would only fiat's own do that? If they do at all

For laptop based I would get the ELM 327 from Gendan, £37 + £3 P&P, available on ebay, you get emailed a download link for enginecheck LE which is a good starter program.

You could then get *special* versions of PCMscan, Digimoto etc from those special sites around the net. You can reset the service indicator using PhilipB's software.

See here http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Car-Diagnostic-Fault-Finding-Shop__W0QQ_armrsZ1

For handheld I personally havent used one, but many on here have.
