Yes. I use it to check the sender wiring, lamp and fan are working. Sort of three for one test The temp light comes on with the fan and the eml a few seconds later. Three or four cycles later the eml goes away. 01 1.2 8V. Has to be safe when you think the ecu would have to allow for the sender going open circuit.

ok so it works:D
however i would still advise against it seeing as we are talking low voltages and the possibility of spiking the ucu as plug comes out

Know what you mean , can never be sure how the ecu will react to spikes. Jump starts, push starts, tricking around with coils and ht leads, connecting batteries and alternators all are a bit of a worry. On balance though reckon ecus are basically bulletproof and the guys who designed them have to have figured that one day some red nosed big shoed person would pull the wires at a sensor plug and the ecu would possibly see intermittent or no input for periods of time. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit but if all my curiosity and amateur testing hasn't blown one to date I must be very lucky.:)

you should be fairly safe pulling the wires for the thermostat, it is very low voltage as its only measuring a resistance across an analogue circuit and the system will be isolated from any of the important digital circuits.

mucking about with coil packs which are capable of far greater back emfs is probably not such a good idea

pants and braces saves money;)
i dont mind pulling plugs off on fords as older ones are bullet proof
fiats----------------- no way:D

iirc if you disconnect the temp sensor with the motor running the fan will come on straightaway but then you'll have a yellow eml lamp for the next two or three journeys until the ecu is convinced it really is reattached.

sorry just got round to posting again, is the temp sensor the box that connects to the airfilter?
