General Fiat Panda Eleganza Automatic

I hope I'm on the right forum. I bought the above car last Sunday and have been practising driving this new, to me, Panda car, my first automatic.
My problem is... I know how I have to start up... brake on, start engine, move gear stick to A/M, release brake and press accelerator.
But all I get then is beeping and the gear being shown in N. If I go into R and then back to centre, then the car shows 1st gear.
So what am I doing wrong. Can someone please help me.

BUZZER WARNING​

For safety reasons, a buzzer warning
sounds when the car is parked with the
gearbox in neutral (​

and (1), (2) or (R) gear engaged, the system
turns on the buzzer and automatically
shifts the gearbox to neutral (N) when:​

the brake pedal is pressed for longer
than 10 minutes;​

the driver’s door is opened and the accelerator

❒ a fault has been detected in the gearbox

Hi there.
Thank you very much for your quick reply to my problem. I still can't understand what I'm doing wrong...I have gone through all the points suggested. Its either something really simple and I'm just not seeing it, or a problem with the gear box. What a pest, I was so delighted with the car and now I'm a bit fed up.

Problem solved...I found an old posting with exactly the same problem...I have to go into N to start up, then the car goes into Automatic mode.
