Hi all,

Fiat Ducato 2006 (pre facelift) 2.3 JTD (244)

I originally put a post on here a few weeks back regarding my airbag light staying on. I CANNOT get this sorted, so I'm hoping someone on here can offer some help. This is the series of events.

1. I had the original airbag ECU checked by Northern Autotech, which was deemed "Unit damaged beyond repair".
2. I bought a second unit off Ebay (Exactly the same numbers - 1328447080 - 5WK43154), but this didn't cure the issue.
3. I was told that the new ECU would need the proxy settings aligned to the vehicle.
4. No local garages to me, would help out.
5. I purchased the appropriate MultiEcuscan software and connectors, and connected it to the vehicle following the instructions. I got "Connection Failed - check the cables", when the appropriate cable was connected.
6. I purchased yet another ECU, and got exactly the same error message. (Previous ECU returned and refunded)

So, the MultiECUscan finds the engine information, but it doesn't seem to be able to find the airbag ECU information.
Is it likely that all 3 ECU's are damaged, or could it be something else - wiring damage etc.

I would really appreciate it if someone could suggest my next steps, or offer any help at all.

Thanks

Tim

Depending on what MES cables you have and whether a full version you may find that is why the MES cannot read the Airbag side.
Others on Forum or Gendan can give good advice.
I use MAXIECU scantool which is different.:)

I spoke to Gendan, who advised which setup to buy. I'll contact them to see if they can help.
If a cheap set of leads that can be a problem I understand, theirs are recommended as good.
If you go on the website it will show what is required to do the tests you need on your model.:)

Unlike the x250, the x244 does not have a canbus. This means that MES will have to communicate directly with the Airbag ECU, via pin 3 of the OBD2 port. In similar circumstances, I would be seeking confirmaton that this connection is available on the adapter cable.

Hi Tim,
I made a brief post earlier, but I will now make a short post to correct some items.

Firstly you describe you 2006 x244 as pre facelift. In fact 2006 was a model change year. The later x250 differs vastly from our 2006 x244s (Yes I have one, but 2,8jtd.) The model changes included a completely new body, multijet engines, new six speed gearbox, and canbus based vehicle wiring.

The term "facelift" is more generally applied to the change from x230 to x244 in 2002. This was more than just a facelift. New side plastic bump protectors were added and the headlamps were changed. A new gearbox was fitted, together with an electronic instrument panel, which uses stepping motors for the analogue indications. The electrical wiring is very different, and a full EOBD2 socket peplaced the 2 wire, 3 pin connection on the x230. The diesel engines without electronic injection control (non common rail) were dropped.

As you may now appreciate, whoever said that your new airbag computer needed proxi alignment on an x244, did not know what they were talking about. There is no network to proxi align.

Thank you for your reply. Without being very technically minded, does this mean I should just be able to fit a new airbag ecu module, and it should work? I've tried 3 (Inc the one the van came with). Am I that unlucky that all 3 were no good? Thanks again 👍

The fact that you have failed with two replacements suggests that we may be missing something. I have looked at my copy of Fiat eLearn, and it is vague regarding the procedure. It only shows two diagrams illustrating removing the plastic moulding, unplugging, and then unbolting the module. As shown here. There is no mention of any special procedure. HI would probably be extra cautious and remove the battery negative well before doing any work on the system.

I am speculating that it may be necessary to programme the module, to match the equipment fitted in the vehicle, rather than proxi align.

It is possible that the airbag ecu is detecting a fault in the air bag circuits / components and therefore turning the airbag warning light on.
Some way of reading why the air bag ecu is illuminating the air bag warning light should be found.....correct cables / software.....then the fault rectified.

For example Fiat multiplas of the 2000s tend to illuminate air bag light due to dirty connector for front passenger seat side air bag . It is a similar age system.

A different example: VAG group cars snap the "clock spring wire" under the steering wheel= air bag light on because circuit to air bag in steering wheel broken. The clue with that one is horn stops working too.

I have contacted Gendan today, and explained everything to them and submitted a report to their support team, to see if there is any help they can offer. My issue is I'm not very technical, so if it is wiring etc. I wouldn't know where to start. My difficulty is finding someone that can take a look, find the issue and rectify it for me.

Clearly MES can only communicate with an air bag ecu if there is one in the van at the time you are trying to connect to it.
Just in case you have been trying to connect to airbag ecu during a time when none of the airbag ecus you have were been fitted in van.
