Hello Everyone

Newbie here. Needs some advice please. I bought Doblo 1.3 multijet in February. Turbo gone. White smoke when idling. I knew it was the turbo when I bought it. Engine sounded good, no knocking noise on 98 000 miles.

Last week me and a mechanic friend took off turbo and DPF. Got a reconditioned turbo with a 2 year warranty certificate. Yesterday me and my mechanic friend installed new turbo with turbo fitting gasket and a cleaned DPF. Changed oil and oil filter. We disconnected the intercooler pipe ,and loads of old oil came out. Anyway he suggested we leave intercooler pipe off and start engine.

Anyway cranked it about 3 -4 times times then a we heard a metal grinding sound coming from bottom end near sump.Sounded like some loose metal.

I'm really disappointed 😞. Don't know what that noise is? What I don't get is that there was no noise before we changed the turbo. My mechanic friend says old turbo suckedup most of the oil. To be honest not much old oil came out when we drained old oil.

My question to anyone please, can someone tell me what went wrong? Seeing we didn't do anything to the engine. Which I don't understand. Engine sounded sound when old turbo was on. Any help would be much appreciated.

In between you hearing it running OK but smoking any chance when driven to workshop it started to "run away", this is when a diesel ingests the engine oil into the inlet manifold and just revs but if you cannot stop the engine by stalling it then it blows up.

A diesel engine runaway is a rare, dangerous condition where the engine runs on an unintended fuel source (usually its own lubricating oil), causing it to overspeed uncontrollable at high RPMs. It cannot be stopped by turning off the ignition. The engine often screams, vibrates, and emits thick smoke, ending in catastrophic failure.
Who ever was driving it would be well aware of it happening. Look online for videos of it:(

Thank you for advice. This is exactly what my friend told me, when leaving intercooler pipe off when we try to start engine. I did so much cleaning before I started doing the engine. It was a plaster Van before. I want to keep the van, I was thinking of rebuilding the engine myself, buying a rebuilding kit. Never done a rebuilding before. I'm a Fleet manager, know a little bit about engines. Any advice ?

I have had a few of the 1.3mjs in Fiats and Vauxhall Combos, mine were mostly OK apart from timing chain issues, injectors not sealing due to poor design retainers, etc. but to be honest I prefer the 1.6 Doblo, more power and six speed gearbox so not working so hard.
It depends what is making the noise, if it did "run on" then it will have put a lot of strain on the engine.:(
It's always interesting to do a engine rebuild and a great learning curve, bear in mind you can spend a lot of money rebuilding those engine and the van will be worth no more that what any van that age and mileage is worth.
It depends what you want to do, if it is immaculate and you intend keeping it for a long time then a rebuild makes sense, if not I would just try and get a s/h engine with a good warranty for £200. Once you start rebuilding it will be all the little extras like a new clutch and dual mass flywheel etc, timing chain kit, bearing set, piston ring set, gasket set and that is assuming nothing major broke, pistons, con rods valves etc. will all run the bill up.
