Hi to all Combo owners. I am new to Fiat Forum, only acquired my van Feb this year (very pleased with it).
I want to pass on an interesting issue I had to deal with lately. Hopefully, it may help some of you in the future.
I had a puncture last week and could not remove the spare tyre at the roadside. Failing my attempts I called the AA.
Problem. I could not engage the extention tool into the lowering mechanism. Access is via a small cutout at the rear, under the left rear door. It is easily seen with the door open. This opening is the guide tube for the lowering tool. AA mechanic struggled also but, using a strong torch shining down the guide tube could see something blocking the female part of the lowering mechanism. He used a long magnetic screwdriver and recovered a small 25mm wood screw that had lodged inside the mechanism. Once removed, the extention tool engaged with the lowering mechanism and the spare wheel fitted.
Suggested solution. Anything small could fall down the access guide tube. The opening needs to be covered. You could use a strong tape but that may tear eventually. I have fitted a small kitchen scourer sponge into the access hole. It expands to hold it in place and takes up the shape instantly, closing the access opening. The sponge is easily recoverable, even if pushed slightly into the guide tube.
Result. New tyre fitted and spare wheel easily stowed away.
Lessons learnt. Take out your spare wheel tool kit and try fitting the lowering tool while you are at home. Don't wait till you are stranded beside the road like me!
