First off my apologies if this information has already been posted somewhere else in the forum but I haven't been able to find it by searching. I believe I'm working on a 1973 Fiat 500 R for a very good friend. The original choke cable is missing and a universal cable was installed that was routed underneath the car and then through holes drilled into the floor pan and the central tunnel by the shifter. I am trying to fit a factory original clutch cable to the starter/choke lever assembly that I got from MrFiat.com. I believe I have the cable routed correctly however I'm missing the clip that secures the L lever end of the choke cable to the starter/choke lever assembly. Also I noticed the choke cable has a collar on the sheath near the lever end. I'm assuming that corresponds to the extra eyelet on the starter/choke lever assembly. Does it matter which side of the eyelet the collar goes on front of car or rear? Is there something else to secure that collar to the extra eyelet? Where can I buy or find a spare for the choke cable clip to secure the cable to the choke lever?

At the risk of asking a stupid question---why are you trying to fit a clutch-cable as a choke cable? The choke-cable for all 500 models is available from"Mr Fiat" (Atlanta)---part number CS-500-002. Lift the 'starter/choke lever assembly between the seats and the panel on top of the the central tunnel (which is behind the seats, just in front of the back seat). Feed the new cable through the central tunnel from the lever end, and then through one of the holes (there should be a vacant hole!) in the rear bulkhead into the engine bay. Put the end of the cable onto the choke lever and refit the lever assembly. In the engine bay, lead the cable up to the carb. The cable fits into the little extension sticking out from the side of the carb--the outer sheath is held by a small screw (I think that it is either 4mm or 5mm) that screws into the extension and the inner cable goes through the clamp section of the choke assembly (which technically is NOT a choke--it is a fuel enrichment device') You might find that the work inside the car is easier if you remove one of the seats--gives you more 'wiggle' room. Simples!

My apologies the error comes from recently working on a motorcycle with a clutch cable routing issue. I am installing a factory choke cable from Mr Fiat. The very cable you described however the hardware that attaches it to the starter/choke lever assembly is missing. Also when I received the car the original cable was already removed without the hardware so I do not have a reference as to how it was attached to the lever. When I attach the new choke cable to the lever assembly it simply falls off the lever so there must be something else that secures it to the lever assembly. I cannot find any pictures of this in the workshop manual the owner brought with the car. I am aware it's a fuel enrichment device and not a true choke (air restriction) from my past experiences working on Keihin and Zenith Stromberg CV style carburetors.

Hi Milo. Is this what you need for your the attachment of the cable for the fuel-enrichment device ? Commonly known as the "choke" cable.
;)

Thank you is there perhaps another clip or piece of hardware that attaches the clutch cable sheath to the other eyelet on the choke/starter lever assembly. The choke cable I received from Mr Fiat has a collar on it and my past experiences with motorcycle cables are that they are secured at the lever ends (cable ends) and again at the sheath on both sides. I can see how the choke cable wire attaches to the carburetor side and it is secured at two points there. I'm guessing it is the same on the lever assembly.

I have a picture of the original system Fiat used to secure both the inner cable and the outer sheath (it is in a "Factory" parts book). If you would like tocontact me direct ( [email protected]) I will try and send you a copy of that page. They have changed the method of securing the cable to the choke lever (plastic was much less used when these cars we originally designed), but when you see the picture I am sure that you will be able to work it all out.
