I started Isabella today to drive back to work from the cafe around the corner and the General warning light is on. Hmm. Everything was fine with her otherwise. Got back to the office and downloaded the Fiat 500 Manual to discover this gem:

Engine oil pressure sensor failure

The warning light turns on when failure is detected in parking sensors.

Even allowing for bad translation I have no idea what the hell that means. I'm assuming that the mention of parking sensors is a typo and that it means engine oil pressure sensor is duff.

Anyone had this? Is this the engine oil pressure sensor?

RTFM! it is your parking sensors! Some people can't read, get off your backside and work it out yourself.. Some people are just lazy..

That is Maxi's work done for him..

See if you can drop in at a garage and ask them to plug it in to their OBDII reader and it will tell you a fault code and from that it will tell you what is up.

My mechanic in Slough has one that I am sure I could talk him into testing it for free for you.

The iPhone app says for General Failure Indication

The warning light switches on in the following circumstances:
Engine oil pressure sensor failure. The warning light switches on in the event of sensor failure. Contact a Fiat Dealership as soon as possible.

Water in diesel filter. The warning light switches on if there is water in the supply circuit. Contact a Fiat Dealership to have the system bled.

Fuel cut-off switch tripped. The warning light indicates that the fuel cut-off switch has tripped or that the system is not available.

Failure on one or more of the following external lights: side, brake, rear fog, indicator, number plate.

Parking sensor failure. The warning light indicates, together with a message on the display, sensor failure.

Water in diesel filter. <-- I'm petrol so not this

Fuel cut-off switch tripped. <-- clearly not that as I'm able to drive it

Failure on one or more of the following external lights: <-- nope all of them work

Parking sensor failure. <-- and I didn't option parking sensors

Looks like I'm ordering a new oil pressure sensor. Thanks :)

the manual continues over the page strangely enough. I had a bulb go and I got scared by the manual too....

i doubt it is a 'smart' sensor so it may just be a loose or shorted wire

Ahh Fiats. Oh well, I've ordered an oil pressure sensor, it'll be here tomorrow. £16 delivered from Interparts so when I do the oil/plugs/filters tomorrow I'll do that as well if its still acting up.

Yup, heading there tomorrow. I still haven't found a reasonably priced workshop to rent around here.

Does the oil pressure warning lamp come on during the self-test when switching on the ignition? If it does- then I doubt it's faulty.

The Generic failure lamp is just that- it can mean practically anything is playing up, but not serious enough to cause damage (eg, just because all the bulbs are working, doesn't mean one isn't on its way out and the system is picking up a slightly higher resistance).
