In general they are the same, mountings wise etc.Hello,
I own a camper fitted with 2.5 TDI 8140.47 engine. I would like to switch it for 8140.43S(2.8 JTD). Has someone done this? Is it even possible?
Thanks.
If you can obtain a earlier 2.8 TDI non ECU it would probably be a more straight forward conversion.I think that the mechanical work may be the easy bit. The 2.8jtd engine will also need a special electrical wiring harness, which may not fit with the existing vehicle harness. You will need to fit an OBD port for reading alarms, and to fit and connect a suitable warning lamp.
@bugsymike has mentioned the gearbox. Replacing the gearbox will probably be the simpler route, but only if taken from an x230 model. The later x244 uses electronic rpm and road speed (kph) indicators, but yours will be mechanical.
The 2.8jtd controls the cooling fans via the ECU, those on your vehicle will be by a thermostat. If wiring is not changed then it may upset the ECU and create an engine alarm.
Accelerator pedal will need changing and connecting.
The points rased above are only those that come to mind, there will probably be others.
If you wish to explore further the perhaps finding an electrical diagram for a 2.8jtd x230 may be a starting point.
Did you ever make this switch?Hello,

The JTD is ECU controlled as you are probably aware, so things start to get more involved.Did you ever make this switch?
We are looking to buy an 8140.47 engine as ours has failed and is beyond repair
We are in Canada and have found an Italian mechanic who advises the engine is beyond repair, a failed injector burned a hole in a piston and caused a lot of damage. We cannot find parts in North AmericaThe JTD is ECU controlled as you are probably aware, so things start to get more involved.
A late possibly, 1997 era 2.8 DTi engine could give you around 122Hp but still should be compatible with most of your running gear.
Note If your vehicle is Front wheel drive then the engine going in must be the same, the reason is those engines were sometimes used in Iveco Daily and other that were RWD.
What was the issue with the old engine?
I am retired now, but have rebuilt several of those Sofim engines in the past, Mostly in Iveco Dailys, but I also rebuilt and fitted one into a boat including marinising it , that engine came from a 1997 Fiat ducato Maxi2.8 rated at 122 in standard form. They were quite a robust unit and even where pistons have smashed bending con rods it has been quite straightforward, even to fitting second hand con rods and pistons, hone the cylinder bores and fit new piston rings, gaskets etc.We are in Canada and have found an Italian mechanic who advises the engine is beyond repair, a failed injector burned a hole in a piston and caused a lot of damage. Looking on eBay new and S/H parts are still available allthough I would caution on checking the integrity of some of the suppliers![]()
I know it may involve a bit of work, but if you locate a good 2.8 JTD engine it may be possible to keep most of your old parts bolted on to the new engine but in pre Common rail form.thank you
