epic engine death :D

Rovers are renound for things like this, I`ve seen several doing the similar things & my cousin (who`s an irritatingly slow driver) managed to throw a rod out the side of his 43,000 mile Honda engined 620i`s block while cruising (60-65mph) on the motorway...

Its this Friday afternoon syndrome that killed Rover.

I dare say your spot on in this case, but believe me, well looked after low mileage ones do the same thing too, Rovers especially, which is why I avoid them like the plague!

No cars immune though, my cousin recently threw a rod in an 8 month old Honda FRV with less than 4000 miles on the clock at a steady 65mph (on the motorway with the cruise control on). V-tec failures, as you probably know, are unheard of. Honda were so shocked, they didnt change it, they gave her a brand new car & her one was sent to head office for a complete strip down.

nah this blew up because it was a scrap yard engine of unknown history, which was overboosted and abused, rattleled and tapped and eventually said enough is enough!

the thing re vtec failures only refers to the vtec unit it itself.. not the rest of it. but if any car did that at that age, i'd want a new one for sure!

this bay getting full..

In the famous words of an Aussie Touring Car driver from the 70's, it appears that engine suffered a severe electrical problem.....

The piston shot out the side of the block and knock the alternator off :ROFLMAO:

Geoghegan wasn't it?

I remember a story about a Top Fuel dragster putting a piston through the side of the block at full tilt once....

It ended up embedded in the side of a truck that was travelling along a road a 1/4 of a mile away!

cant wait to see this finnished hope you get a video. Is the big silver box in the intake system a water cooled intercooler afair? cause it has the smaller pipe on the front.

it is a water / air charge cooler, yeah.

not had chance to strip the old block yet, but doubt there'd be a big lump of piston in there - think it's just been turned to dust tbh!

Well its all working nicely now. Apart from as expected a GT30 turbo with 270 Cams etc equals lots of lag. Basically set off from the traffic lights from idle to WOT and nothing will happen till 4krpm and then it'll break traction hehe.

Just need to slowly build up the boost as its only running around 7-8psi at the moment. But how does one know when enough is enough? Just keep an eye on the afr and keep crankin up the boost and fuel to match?
